Job Summary 

Teachers will join an NSF-funded project focused on the genomics of urban evolution in house mice. STEM teachers will work closely with the Phifer-Rixey Lab and participate in field and/or laboratory research during a 7-week summer program. In addition to gaining experience in an active research lab, teacher participants will contribute to developing teaching materials related to the research for use in K-12 classrooms. This position is based at Drexel University with opportunities for fieldwork in and around the city.

Participants will be provided with a $6,000 stipend. In addition, participants will be able to order up to $1,000 in supplies to continue research in the classroom and up to $1000 in conference travel reimbursement for related professional development.

Essential Functions 

  • Field and laboratory activities relating to evolutionary genetics including, but not limited to, sampling, collecting trait data, and extracting nucleic acids from samples.
  • Data analysis.
  • Development of teaching materials ~25%.
  • Curation of data and documentation of all research activities and analysis.
  • Maintenance of laboratory and field supplies.
  • Assist with outreach and education activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications 

  • Minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Biology or a closely related field
  • Minimum of a year completed year as a middle or high school science teacher.
  • Middle or high school science teachers that have a college degree.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Primary teaching responsibility in the life sciences, including biology, environmental science, or closely related fields.

Physical Requirements 

  • Typically sitting at a desk/table
  • Typically standing, walking.
  • Typically bending, crouching, stooping.

Additional Information 

This is a Full time Temporary Position classified as Non-Exempt.  The offered pay is based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
