UC San Diego is searching for a dedicated Research Equipment Laborer to support the construction and assembly of oceanographic research equipment for a 6-month temporary assignment.

Duration: This role is anticipated to last 6 months

Compensation: $20.17/hour. Eligible for paid holidays and vacation/sick leave. Medicalbenefits also available.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30A - 5:00P

Location: 100% on-site on campus in La Jolla.

As a Research Equipment Laborer, your primary responsibility will be to assist our technical staff in research equipment fabrication and warehouse support.


What are we looking for?
  • Our ideal candidate must be comfortable building and assembling equipment and following detailed instructions or blueprints.

  • They will possess basic knowledge of hand tools, carpentry tools, and simple hardware components such as bolts, screws, washers, and nuts.

  • They must be comfortable working in a warehouse/laboratory environment where they may be working with equipment that has been exposed to the ocean

  • Physical capability is essential, as the role involves lifting and carrying items weighing up to 75lbs.

  • Must have a Valid Driver license.

What does this role entail?

Drifter Fabrication

  • Assisting in the fabrication process of drifters (oceanographic devices).

  • Sorting and organizing drifter components to prepare for assembly.

  • Counting discrete inventoried components based on staff instructions.

Package Handling

  • Receiving and processing incoming packages related to oceanographic instruments.

  • Making these packages available to designated staff members.

  • Packaging and dropping off outgoing packages as directed by staff.

General Upkeep

  • Maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the warehouse.

  • Ensuring the proper storage and care of equipment and materials.

  • Keeping the shop and studio areas tidy and functional.

This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.


Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $42,115 - $49,256 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $20.17 - $23.59

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
