Position Focus:

The School of Engineering and Applied Science (Yale Engineering) is seeking to hire an experienced grant proposal development specialist with scientific and technical writing skills, knowledge of/or experience with project management practices, and strong written communication and interpersonal skills to support mid-scale proposal development efforts across the school.

The Research Development Specialist (RDS) will support Principal investigators and research personnel with a high degree of independence and limited supervision.

The RDS will work directly with faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to pursue strategic, externally sponsored research funding opportunities. The RDS will work with faculty to identify funding opportunities of interest and assist with writing compelling and competitive proposals responsive to these opportunities.  They will advise on elements of competitive applications and provide support in proposal narrative development, consolidation, review, critiquing, and editing.  

The RDS will facilitate proposal development of large, interdisciplinary, and inter-institutional projects in collaboration with pre-award and research development professionals across the University.

This role will be integral in strengthening the Yale Engineering research community, providing faculty teams with support needed to grow sponsored research in areas aligned with the school strategic priorities furthering the school’s overall impact.

Essential Duties

1. Leads the identification and evaluation of potential funding sources, the submission of grants and contracts supporting the program. 2. Responsible for disseminating and publishing all program information. 3. Assists in developing and implementing strategic plans. 4. Initiates, designs, and manages the compilation of program communications; identifies outreach potential, and promotes philanthropic and collaborative support of the program. 5. Obtains grant funding through timely submission of well researched, well written and well-documented grant proposals. 6. Maintains and implements a calendar of potential funding activities 7. Utilizes appropriate University and sponsor electronic systems to effectively manage, submit and/or report sponsored projects activity. 8. Assists in guiding and directing policy, procedure, and training of sponsored project activities. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree and six years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Proven experience in a research environment including participation in the grant submission process and compliance. Excellent narrative and technical writing. Proven experience in grant proposal preparation and grant management.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills. Proven ability to adapt communication style to address the needs of individuals at all levels. Proven ability to negotiate skillfully with both internal and external constituents.  Demonstrated ability to be able to present ideas and communicate effectively, both verbally and in written materials. 


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability to read and interpret policies, procedures, and guidelines.   Demonstrated ability to analyze and summarize funding opportunity announcements.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Strong self-organization skills, ability to prioritize, have strong attention to detail.  Ability to work under pressure effectively, efficiently, and independently, able to set priorities among multiple competing tasks with demonstrated ability to be able to drive forward project objectives according to set timelines and deliver on project aims.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated ability to work productively across academic departments and to develop and to foster partnerships with a wide variety of university and external constituencies. Proven experience working with research teams to develop successful proposal strategies.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Masters or higher degree in engineering or a relevant discipline plus three years progressive program management experience.  Proven experience with preparing or submitting grants to NIH, DOD, DOE, NASA, NOAA, USDA, and/or other federal agencies.
