Mellon College of Science (MCS) is home to four departments and many programs and research centers that cross disciplines. We approach scientific problems from fresh angles using creative interdisciplinary approaches while drawing on our departmental strengths in the core sciences. MCS faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their research in a variety of fields, including polymer science, cosmology, mathematical finance and neuroscience.

The Department of Biological Sciences within the Mellon College of Science is seeking a full-time Lab Manager to work in the laboratory of Dr. Aryn Gittis (https://labs.bio.cmu.edu/gittis/). This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. In this role, you will be responsible to oversee the day-to-day operation of a specialized laboratory.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Summarizing statistical information for analysis, presentation and written technical reports.
  • Oversees the conduct of experiments in a specialized laboratory. May offer recommendations into experiment design, interpretation and reporting of results.
  • Assures that laboratory procedures meet regulatory and government standards. Provides advice and recommendations to procedure modification as needed.
  • Provides oversight and training to graduate and undergraduate students in laboratory operations and procedures and safety.
  • Supervises staff providing regular feedback, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Assures that quality checks on safety of laboratories are completed. Maintains specialized equipment, recommends equipment repair or purchase. Maintains supply inventory and submits replacement orders as needed including biohazards.
  • Maintains and manages animal colony.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological field or equivalent experience and education. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 3 to 8 years of laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of optogenetics, electrophysiology, histology.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required.
  • Strong problem solving and reasoning skills required.
  • Ability to pay strict attention to protocol preparation.
