The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science invites applications for a Research Associate I position in Fishery Biology/Ecology located in Galveston, TX.

Applicants must have at a minimum a Bachelor’s degree in marine biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field.  The successful applicant will be responsible for conducting field sampling and laboratory analyses supporting Galveston Laboratory Habitat Ecology Branch projects relevant to fishery ecology research and fisheries science.  Duties will include sampling animal and plant populations in the field using a variety of sampling gears; sorting and identifying preserved animals and plants from field samples; conducting laboratory analyses such as sediment grain size and sediment organic content; and operating and maintaining sampling and laboratory equipment including small boats and motors, pumps, water quality instrumentation, computers, and other electronic sampling instruments.  Additional tasks include entering research data into computer databases, assisting principal investigators in preparing for and organizing field operations, and participating in community outreach activities.  The successful candidate must be able to work well in a team aboard small boats while conducting inshore and nearshore fieldwork.  The successful candidate should be proficient in the use of taxonomic keys to identify fish and invertebrate species and must have a thorough working knowledge of common computer applications for word processing and database management (e.g., MS Word, MS Excel).  The research will involve close collaboration with scientists at RSMAS and the Habitat Ecology Branch in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Southeast Fisheries Science Center Galveston Laboratory (SEFSC-Galveston) in Galveston, TX.
