The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science (Rosenstiel) invites applicants for a full time Research Associate I position. We seek an individual to join our Ocean Carbon Cycle group to support fieldwork by helping install and maintain oceanographic instruments set up on a variety of ships including research vessels and commercial ships, and processing and quality controlling the data provided by these instruments. The position will be located in Miami, FL.

The candidate is expected to develop under the guidance of more established scientists in the group and will perform tasks related to the acquisition and analyses of biogeochemical and inorganic carbon data. The position involves troubleshooting, maintenance, and improvement of the oceanographic instrumentation. The candidate will also run instrumentation to analyze samples and be involved in efforts to improve and document the protocols and methodology for sample analysis, data processing, and report writing.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Installing, troubleshooting and maintaining oceanographic instrumentation on a variety of ships. Trips 2-7 days in duration are anticipated multiple times per year, often on short notice, to perform maintenance on systems when ships are in port.
  • Troubleshooting, maintenance and calibration of oceanographic systems in lab.
  • Processing and quality controlling the data collected on ships of opportunity and submitting quality-controlled data and metadata to a variety of repositories.
  • Sample analysis in lab and data processing for a variety of carbon system parameters.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, marine studies, oceanography, physics, chemistry, or related fields.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and maintaining oceanographic equipment is highly desirable.
  • Necessary skills include the ability to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities, time management, and work under guidance of a collaborative and diverse team. The ability to work and collaborate in a diverse group setting is essential.
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills, good organizational skills, and the ability and availability to assist and support fieldwork trips.
  • Being meticulous with attention to detail and willingness to follow established best practices of analyses
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required.
  • Experience with commonly used software and protocols in the oceanographic community such as NetCDF, Ocean DataView, MatLab/Python/LabView or other programming languages will be a plus. 
  • Basic knowledge of mechanics, electrics and electronics also a plus.

The position is located at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory's Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystem Division in Miami, FL.
