Posting Context Statement
The position supports Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in researching empirical operator performance data collection, HRA modeling and advanced reactor control concept prototyping. They contribute to a subcontract leveraging human factors expertise from the University of Idaho, Idaho Falls, to enhance technical competence in advanced reactor research. The Center for Advanced Energy Studies is a collaborative effort between Idaho’s research universities and INL, focusing on research and education.
Position Overview
Performs research activities and analysis; implements and evaluates research procedures and data. Records observations and measurements then reports results. Responsible for analyzing and preparing results for publication. Works under general supervision with a certain degree of creativity and latitude. May supervise junior research personnel.
Duties may include:
  • Providing technical support in planning and/or designing of scientific projects, studies, or applications
  • Planning and conducting research and analysis of scientific data
  • Interpreting test results and comparing with determined standards and limits
  • Identifying and evaluating scientific samples and determining need for further testing
  • Developing recommendations and/or providing solutions, standards, and protocol to a wide range of difficult problems
  • Planning, designing, developing, monitoring and/or evaluating portions of a scientific project, study, or application
  • Providing scientific evaluations/assessments
  • Researching, implementing, standardizing, and evaluating new procedures
  • Maintaining detailed records of results and prepares written reports acceptable to the Principal Investigator and funding agencies
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications


Required Experience
  • Two years of post-bachelor’s research experience related to the domain of this position
Required Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology
Required Other
  • Must be able to obtain an Idaho National Laboratory identification badge
  • Must be able to perform work at the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) or Idaho National Laboratory (INL) research facility as requested by the INL technical point of contact

Additional Preferred
  • Master’s degree in Psychology
  • Research experience using Human Unimodel for Nuclear Technology to Enhance Reliability (HUNTER), a dynamic HRA software tool.
  • Research experience with human reliability analysis (HRA) data collection using the Rancor Microworld Simulator.
  • Past experience with human factors research and development of technologies for nuclear power plant control rooms and other safety and security critical industries.
  • Past experience collecting and compiling data and organizing into research reports
  • Past experience contributing to proposal preparation
