Position Description
The Digital, Data, and Design (D^3) Institute at Harvard is looking for a Research Associate (RA) to support research activities at our newly formed research labs. The RAs will work with Harvard Business School faculty, under the supervision of a lab manager and in collaboration with other D^3 staff.
The Platform Lab, which operates within D^3 and is led by Professors Chiara Farronato and Feng Zhu, is seeking a quantitative Research Associate. The lab’s research focuses mainly on creating a roadmap for businesses and policymakers that are interested in creating an innovative, socially impactful, and inclusive platform ecosystem. Ideal RA candidates will be comfortable in an environment that requires a high level of independence, intellectual curiosity, and rigor.
The lab is particularly interested in pre-doctoral candidates, who would consider spending two years at the lab gaining valuable research experience for an eventual PhD program.
Duties:
- Collect, preprocess, and analyze data.
- Conduct background research and literature reviews.
- Assist with preparation of presentations and class materials.
- Manage projects and engage with field partners.
- Exercise independent decision making with regard to progression of research projects and methodologies. Must be able to structure assignments and keep faculty member informed as necessary, using own judgment.
- Responsible for other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, data science, computer science, statistics, information systems, or related field.
- Experience with cleaning and analyzing data. Candidates will be asked to complete a coding exercise.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Proficiency in R, Python, or Stata is required. Prior RA experience is a plus.
The candidate is expected to maintain high standards in terms of quality of work, attention to detail, organizational skills, and commitment to task completion. They must be able to balance multiple tasks and shifting priorities under tight deadlines at an accelerated pace when necessary. They must be willing to learn new skills around data analysis and experimental design.
This position is particularly suitable for candidates who are interested in pursuing a PhD in business or economics afterwards (many of our past RAs were admitted into top PhD programs including Harvard, MIT, Chicago, Berkeley, Toronto, Columbia, and Northwestern).
Additional Information
This is a full-time term appointment starting summer 2024 through June 30, 2025, with potential for re-appointment for the following year. All HBS RA roles are structured as one-year appointments.
This role is offered as a hybrid (some combination of onsite and remote) where you are required to be onsite at our Boston, MA based campus 2-4 days per week. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.
We may conduct candidate interviews virtually (phone and/or via Zoom) and/or in-person for this role.
