Organizational Unit Overview
The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is a 40-year-old medical school with a strong primary care orientation. The school was established in 1974 by the North Carolina legislature. BSOM’s mission is to increase the supply of primary care physicians serving the state, to improve the health and well-being of the region, and to train physicians who will meet the health care needs of the state.
The Department of Academic Affairs is responsible for leadership and managing all academic programming and assessment related to medical student education, resident/fellow postgraduate training, faculty development, and continuing medical education at the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM).
The Brody School of Medicine Office of Clinical and Educational Scholarship, a unit of the Department of Academic Affairs, supports learner, faculty, and staff excellence in scholarly activities pertaining to patient care, population health, health professions education, and professional development in academic medicine. The office directly supports clinical and educational scholarly projects within Brody School of Medicine, provides education and consultation on project methodology and dissemination of findings, and fosters scholarly collaboration within Brody School of Medicine and ECU Health, a not-for-profit hospital system serving more than 1.4 million people across 29 predominantly rural counties in eastern North Carolina.
The primary purpose of the Research Associate is to assist the departments of Pediatrics, Cardiovascular Sciences (CVS) and Academic Affairs in the development, execution, and publication of investigator-initiated research and other scholarly activities. The Research Associate will work with departmental and school research leadership to contribute to study design, regulatory approval, data collection, data analysis, manuscript writing, and grant writing. Additionally, this position will contribute to research education and research mentorship for department faculty, residents, fellows, and students.
The Research Associate will report directly to the Assistant Dean of Clinical and Educational Scholarship in the Department of Academic Affairs, with additional mentorship and supervision from the Chairs of Pediatrics and CVS
Job Duties
30% – Participate in writing and submitting abstracts, manuscripts, and grants.
30% – Contribute to study design, ethical approval (IRB submission and renewal), data management, and data analysis
40% – Work closely with faculty in the departments of Pediatrics and CVS to identify writing opportunities and move projects towards publication; Participate in writing and submitting abstracts, manuscripts, and grants; Meet regularly with project lead faculty in Pediatrics and CVS and facilitate project management; Prepare reports presentations, and databases summarizing scholarly activity in the departments of Pediatrics and CVS; Actively include and supervise students and residents participating in scholarly activity; Teach and mentor junior faculty, fellows, residents in research methods; Attend departmental research meetings in the Departments of Pediatrics and CVS and organize annual departmental research events; Collaborate with research leadership at the school and other departments as needed
Goals:
1. Increase the number of publications and regional/national presentations by faculty and learners (students, residents, and fellows)
2. Increase proportion of faculty and learners within each department who are participating in scholarly activity
3. Increase the number of grant applications submitted by departmental faculty
Contingent upon availability of funds.
Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree in a discipline related to the field assigned. Experience conducting bivariate and multivariable tests. Experience with statistical analysis software packages such as Stata, R, or SAS. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
