Position Focus:

This position will provide lab managerial oversight responsibilities in three major categories: laboratory operations, clinical research coordination, and administrative support for the Principal Investigators. Under the direction and supervision of the two Principal Investigators, the individual will spend approximately 50% of their time working on studies related to the development of the immune system in early life and its roles in disease pathogenesis ranging from preterm labor to intestinal complications. The other 50% of the time will be dedicated to working with the NOuRISH (Yale Neonatal Nutrition Outcomes Research In Sustaining mother and infant Health) team focused on infant health outcomes that are affected by pregnancy and lactation with specific focus on the mother/infant lactation experience, infant growth and development, particularly in the setting of growth restrictions and prematurity. Responsibilities include orienting and training other members of the lab who may include postdoctoral associates, postgraduate associates, research assistants, clinical trainees and students (graduate, medical, & undergraduate), as well as the responsibilities below, organized by theme.

Laboratory operations Responsibilities include but are not limited to: overseeing the smooth operation of the research laboratories; preparing chemicals and reagents; ordering and maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies, maintaining sample inventory, keeping records of laboratory purchases and expenses, maintaining laboratory equipment, organizing laboratory and equipment services, and keeping the laboratory up to Environmental Health & Safety regulations; design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of the Principal Investigator; regular interaction with internal contacts including the PIs, research assistants, graduate students, clinical coordinators, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory; regular interaction with external contacts (such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology companies) to consult on research methods and products;

Clinical Research Coordination Responsibilities include but are not limited to: collaborating with clinical research nurses and physicians (NOURISH team) to organize and schedule the collection of biospecimens by appropriate staff. Complete Electronic Medical Record (EMR) training and registration, then follow consented patient cases via EMR for timely sample collection. Maintain biological sample organization and inventory of the NOuRISH biorepository. Prepare institutional review board (IRB) protocols, material transfer agreements (MTAs), data sharing agreements (DSAs), shipping and receiving of samples from ongoing studies.

Administrative Support Responsibilities include but are not limited to: scheduling with the Principal Investigators’ calendar, scheduling of various lab meetings, maintaining laboratory website, organizing lab events; scheduling and coordination with all the above researchers in the course of clinical and basic research.


Essential Duties

1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority. 2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning 3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly. 4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. 6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory. 7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

A highly organized, self-motivated and time efficient individual with excellent interpersonal, written communication, and oral communication skills. Ability to multi-task, and to perform both independently, as well as in a team environment.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Proven reliability and a professional attitude with the ability to stay focused on detailed-orientated work and have accurate record keeping. Displays a positive attitude and flexibility in changing situations.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Proven ability in the following scientific techniques and procedures: tissue/cell culture, cryo-preservation of live cells and tissues for high quality cell viability, protein, and nucleic acid recovery.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Proven ability with Mac and PC with intermediate knowledge using Workday, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint. Safari/Firefox and Zoom. Website design is a bonus.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Proven ability in training and/or instructing lab members who may include postdoctoral associates, postgraduate associates, research assistants, clinical trainees and students and provide assistance where needed.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Proven experience in the following scientific techniques and procedures is preferred but not essential: Human tissue processing, immune cell isolation, transfections, flow cytometry analysis, and immunohistochemistry.
