The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate 1 Tele Ophthalmology Research Fellowship with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida.

The incumbent supports research activities for the assigned division by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects. Moreover, the incumbent operates with the goal of advancing his/her expertise through continued education, training, and research

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures.

  • Participates in the publication of significant results.

  • Maintains an overview of relevant research findings. 

  • Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice.

  • Keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research.

  • Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures.

  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.

  • Performs a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies.

  • Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field 

Experience:

No prior experience required

Department Specific Functions

 

The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute’s (BPEI) Teleophthalmology Research Fellowship enables medical students and ophthalmologists to explore cutting edge medical technology and innovative models of care, shaping the future landscape of ophthalmology.

 

Areas of research include, but are not limited to, creation and evaluation of disruptive technologies (such as extended reality, artificial intelligence, biosensors, and new models of virtual care) in clinical settings and in ophthalmic education. 

Research scholars are selected based on academic achievement. The selected scholar will be expected to:

 

1. Work in-person with a mentor at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute

2. Conduct translational research on the use of disruptive technologies applied to Ophthalmology, virtual care, and ophthalmic-related education.

3. Proactively design and manage research projects as coordinators.

4. Integrate research projects into clinical settings by streamlining innovative workflows.

5. Develop experience in biostatistics and manuscript writing.

6. Publish original research.

7. Present findings at national/international ophthalmic and telehealth-related conferences, under the guidance and supervision of Bascom Palmer faculty. 

8. Foster community outreach through various institutional initiatives. 

 

Department Specific Qualifications 

 

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field, preferably in healthcare.

Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:

• Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

• Informatics proficiency with word processing, power point presentations, use of excel. 

• Ability to use statistical software.

• Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.

• Ability to network and foster collaboration in an agile working environment.

• Curious and open-minded, willing to explore.

• Passion for community outreach.
