Research Associate 1 – Coral  Technician

The Coral Reef Futures Lab (CRFL) at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami has an exciting full-time position for a Research Associate 1 to serve as a Coral Technician at the UM Experimental Hatchery.

Responsibilities for this full-time position focus on assisting with the production, rearing, and out planting of sexually derived coral recruits, and the coordination of coral spawning activities across a team of investigators. This includes the creation and coordination of daily/weekly aquarium husbandry lists, as well as the training and supervision of volunteer students to carry out the upkeep of various coral systems. The position is based at UM’s Rosenstiel School with extensive responsibilities at the adjacent UM Experimental Hatchery, a land-based coral nursery dedicated to the propagation and growth of Caribbean corals which is undergoing a period of expansion.

Although this position includes work on indoor systems, laboratories, and spawning tanks, significant time will be spent at the outdoor hatchery. South Florida weather can be both unpredictable and at times extreme, and sun-protective clothing and head coverage via sunhat or hooded shirt are required. Applicants should be prepared to work up to 4-5 hours at a time outdoors and on occasion be prepared to work hours outside of the regular business work week, as they will be jointly accountable for the response to equipment alerts, as well as involvement in night-time spawning activities.

A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field is required. Underwater fieldwork as part of a team is also highly desirable, and an AAUS Scientific Diving certification, and/or MOCC boating certification, are preferred. Favorable applicants have a background in coral restoration science, aquaculture, or related field, as well as knowledge of aquarium husbandry. This position reports to the Coral Facilities Manager and coordinates with graduate students and staff in the Coral Reef Futures Lab. We are looking for candidates who are responsible, committed to the health of the corals under their care, with excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with others, paired with the capability to diagnose and delegate duties related to plumbing, electrical, or other operational obstacles.
