Research Assistant

Lab Goals:

Our lab is primarily focused on breeding tomatoes for superior flavor. This lab operates year-round to collect data on sugars, acids, and volatile compounds of tomato fruit.  As a part of our lab, you will have the opportunity to learn about flavor breeding techniques and see what goes into breeding tasty tomatoes!

Schedule can be flexible to accommodate classes but does require multi-hour blocks (minimum of 4-hour blocks), with a consistent schedule from week-to-week.

Lab Assistant Essential Duties:

• Work outside in both the field and greenhouses
• Assist with greenhouse maintenance (pollination and hybridization)
• Assist with DNA extractions and gel electrophoresis
• Assist with collection and processing of tomato samples:
  • Volatile collection
  • Seed collection
  • Sugars and Acids

Job Details:

• Flexible to work between 8-40 hours per week

• Be able to follow verbal directions and carry out lab-specific protocols with precision and accuracy
• Be able to perform tasks efficiently
• Be willing to ask questions when unsure
• Interest in plant science and food production
