Summary:

 

The Department of Psychology and Neuroscience plays an integral role in the research profile of Temple, with many of our award-winning faculty recognized internationally for their research programs with active funding by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, or private foundations. 

 

The Research Assistant will assist with a research project investigating neurobiological mechanisms underlying the vulnerability to addiction. The incumbent will collect and analyze animal behavioral data, manage the mouse breeding colony, conduct animal surgery and tissue harvesting, and perform molecular biological analysis of brain tissue. Additionally, the incumbent will coordinate laboratory activities, prepare buffers and other laboratory reagents, and help manage the laboratory inventory. The Research Assistant will assist with producing manuscripts and conference presentations and train undergraduates in basic laboratory techniques.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

 

BA/BS in Psychology, Neuroscience, or related field.  Individuals expecting to graduate before the position starts are encouraged to apply.   Education should include coursework in neuroscience, research methods, and statistics, along with a laboratory course in one of the following areas: Neuroscience, Biology, or Chemistry.

 

At least six months of directedly related research/laboratory experience working with rodents. 

 

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

 

 

Required Skills & Abilities:  

  •        Demonstrated proficiency in working with laboratory rodents.
  •        Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with various individuals effectively.
  •        Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office or comparable software, including creating spreadsheet presentations.
  •        Strong analysis skills and ability to manage and analyze data.
  •        Strong project management, organizational, and planning skills.
  •        Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team to meet deadlines.
  •        Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  •        Ability to train and monitor the work of others.
  •        Ability to establish priorities and provide feedback and/or training.
  •        Ability to work nights and/or weekends, as necessary.

Preferred:

  •        Ability to perform small animal surgery on mice.
  •        Experience with Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, histological techniques and/or animal behavioral testing.  
  •        Demonstrated experience with statistical software, such as Prism.

 

 

This position is assigned a hybrid work arrangement (on-campus and remote), the duration of this hybrid work arrangement is at the discretion of Temple University and the Department.
