What we want

The research assistant will study the molecular mechanisms used by bacteriophage to kill bacterial hosts. Duties will include conducting microbiology and genetics experiments to answer various research questions, learning new techniques needed for the projects, careful documentation and presentation of results, maintaining lab equipment and supplies, and respectfully working with other lab members, including students.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Appropriate bachelor's or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in molecular cloning, training in eukaryotic tissue culture techniques
  • Demonstrated skills in conducting phage related microbiology and genomics research, including analyzing data and writing reports, such as through public presentation or publication
  • Ability to manage time efficiently and thoroughly document results and samples
  • Standard microbiology and molecular biology laboratory skills for DNA and protein manipulation
  • Skills in bioinformatics analysis of bacteriophage genomes
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or similar field
  • 1 year experience in Biosafety level 2 microbiology laboratory environment
  • Laboratory experience in microbiology
  • Experience working with bacteriophage, including isolation, culturing, and characterization at the bench
  • Experience presenting research results at scientific venues

Responsibilities:

  • Conducting microbiology and genetics experiments to answer various research questions
  • Maintaining critical laboratory equipment
  • Ordering supplies and maintaining lab inventory
  • Maintaining detailed records of data obtained in the laboratory
  • Preparing reports and manuscripts
  • Training and supporting lab members
  • Performs other duties as assigned
