The School of Freshwater Sciences (SFS) at UWM is the only school in the nation dedicated solely to the study of freshwater issues. Its interdisciplinary research and education programs link science with action and are integrated across five major areas: freshwater system dynamics; human and ecosystem health; freshwater technology; freshwater economics, policy, and management; and climate and atmospheric sciences. Job Summary
We are seeking a Research Assistant Professor to work on wastewater surveillance and antibiotic resistance occurrence in untreated wastewater. The ideal candidate will serve as a subject matter expert in the areas of microbiome research, antibiotic resistance, and public and environmental microbiology. The Research Assistant Professor will direct and contribute to multiple projects focused on optimizing wastewater surveillance approaches for antibiotic resistant bacteria and examining the genomic context and sources of these organisms. This person will also contribute to securing extramural funding and prepare findings for publication. The Research Assistant professor will participate in training and mentoring students in this area. This full-time 12 month position will include the following responsibilities:
  • Implement wastewater treatment plant and facility monitoring for antibiotic resistance genes as part of our Center of Excellence.
  • Preform laboratory and bioinformatic analysis for microbes of interest
  • Secures intramural and extramural funding through grants to establish financial independence for research program(s)
  • Develops and publish research content in peer-reviewed publications, present materials at conferences
  • Develop, provide training, and implement Biosafety plans
  • Supervises the day-to-day activities of students and lab technicians
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in Molecular biology, microbiology or related field
  • 2 years of experience in a post doc position
  • Experience with developing qPCR or ddPCR assays and related data analysis
  • Experience with analyzing genome sequence data
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with developing Biosafety protocols for BSL2 and BSL2-plus
  • Experience in wastewater surveillance or microbial ecology studies
  • Record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Record of contributing to grant writing
  • Experience with bioinformatic analyses
  • Good written and verbal communication
Target Salary Range $63,000 – $75,000 (Final salary offer will be determined based on knowledge, skills, and experience)
