Description of Work
The Department of Animal Science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) is seeking applications for a Research Assistant Professor in Ruminant Nutrition. This 12-month (calendar year), non-tenure track appointment will have an apportionment of 60% research and 40% teaching. The successful candidate will assist ruminant nutrition faculty by leading a project area mutually decided by faculty and the candidate. The position will be located in Lincoln, Nebraska.
This research assistant professor will contribute to the integrated research teaching land-grant mission of IANR as an effective scholar and citizen.
Research Focus (60%)
The successful candidate will have the following research duties:
  • Lead the Masters of Applied Science specialization in Beef Cattle Production and Minor in Beef Cattle Nutrition. Advise students enrolled in the specialization and minor (20%).
  • Develop an extramurally funded research program in ruminant nutrition in accordance with the successful applicant’s expertise and university resources (40%). Possible areas of research include fundamental digestion and metabolism, forage chemistry, environmental impacts of beef cattle production, and feedlot production. The successful candidate will be expected to recruit and advise traditional graduate students (M.S. and Ph.D.) as a part of their research program.


    • Teaching Focus (40%)
    The incumbent will be expected to average .40 FTE as determined by the CASNR Academic Appointment Guidelines and will be responsible for teaching classes in nutrition and beef or dairy systems necessary to meet a 40% teaching appointment. The candidate will be expected to teach the following classes:

    • ASCI 220 – 2 credits, Feeds and Feeding (taught in the fall).
    • ASCI 422/822 – 3 credits, Advanced Feeding and Feed Formulation Class (taught in the fall).
    • ASCI 806 – 1 credit, graduate seminar servicing the distance MAS program.
    • ASCI 905 – 1 credit, graduate industry seminar servicing the distance MAS program.

    Other classes to fulfill the teaching requirement that may be taught based on the successful applicant’s expertise include:
    • ASCI 453 – 3 credits, Advanced Dairy Management.
    • ASCI 486 – 3 credits, Animal Biological Systems.
    • ASCI 281 – 1 credit, sophomore fall class in the Krutzinger Beef Industry Scholars Minor.
    • ASCI 924/AGRO 824 – 3 credits, forage evaluation for graduate students.
    • Administration of Engagement in Animal Science Pedagogy digital badge.

    In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

    Minimum Required Qualifications
    • Ph.D. in Animal Science.
    • Expertise in ruminant nutrition.
    • Familiarity with beef feedlot and/or dairy production in Nebraska and the U.S.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience, training, and/or working knowledge of the beef feedlot and/or dairy industry in Nebraska and the U.S.
    • Experience and/or training in developing a graduate research program.
    • Strong evidence of teaching experience and ability to teach nutrition courses that include in-person and distance students.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Evidence of collaboration and working on collaborative teams.
