Job Summary/Basic Function
The Agriculture Research and Development Program (ARDP) in the College of Science, Technology and Agriculture, (CESTA) at Central State University is seeking a 12 month, tenure track, Research Assistant Professor in Forestry who has an established background in silviculture. Candidates who have previously focused on oak silviculture are encouraged to apply. The candidate is expected to research into expanding oak and hickory populations in Ohio’s forest regions. The candidate must have a strong background in forest management with an emphasis on ecological silviculture and/or forest restoration. Experience with mixed species stands, natural hardwood forests, or sensitive/ threatened forest ecosystems will be additionally useful. The candidate is expected to develop an internationally recognized, externally-funded research program in ecological silviculture with reference to oak and hickory under conditions expected in Ohio’s forests. Possible areas of focus include ecological forest management, forest ecosystem restoration, adaptive management of forest ecosystems to promote forest health and other ecosystem services such as a carbon sequestration, biodiversity, wildlife management, water storage and flood control prevention. The candidate is strongly encouraged to collaborate with other faculty in the CESTA, and other scientists in the region and from the US Forest Service.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Establish and maintain a competitive research program in oak siviculture and forest management that directly impacts appropriate stakeholders in Ohio and beyond in forestry.
  • Engage in research in developing testing tools for forest managers and stakeholders for improving oak and hickory populations in Ohio’s forests.
  • Provide mentoring and advising to undergraduate students by engaging them in research.
  • Conduct and publish research in the area of specialty.
  • Participate in university and professional development activities.
  • Serve on university-wide committees as needed.
  • Serve as CSU/CESTA representative in the Ohio Inter Agency Forestry Team
  • Establish oneself in community service and collaborate with CSU’s cooperative extension program in extending research to CSU stakeholders in.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Director for Research
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. degree in silviculture, forest management or related areas.
  • The candidate must have at least on degree from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited forestry program, preferably.
  • Evidence of peer-reviewed publications in the areas of oak/ hickory silviculture, forest management sustainable forestry;
  • Demonstrated skill in securing grants or strong potential to secure extramural funding;
  • Experience and interest in mentoring/ teaching students from diverse culture and ethnic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Post-doctoral experience preferred
  • Evidence of interdisciplinary collaborations or potential for collaborations both within and external to the university.
  • Involvement with recognized professional associations or organizations.
  • Must be able to represent Central State University as an 1890 Land Grant Institution to the public including federal and non-federal agencies, and research, agriculture and industry interests.
  • Transfer information through scholarly publications, patents and representations at scientific meetings and through technology transfer to agriculture and industry groups.
