Minimum Experience/Education
Four-year degree or equivalent combination of training and experience necessary to perform the work.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Basic understanding in Genomics/ Molecular biology/DNA and RNA Sequencing with some laboratory experiences. Applicant must have strong organizational skills, work very well independently, be able to collaborate and communicate with participating labs of the Genomics facility in the department of Biological Sciences. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and basic knowledge of various sequencing techniques (i.e. NGS, Sanger sequencing, etc) is needed. Applicant with experiences in handling MiSeq type Illumina Genome Sequencer and Illumina Basespace Sequence Hub cloud services is preferred. Master’s Degree preferred, not required.
Duties and Responsibilities
This position is for a research assistant for 20 hours per week to perform routine operation and maintenance of a Illumina MiSeq genome sequencer in a newly established Genomics Core in the department of Biological Sciences. Under the supervision of a Director/Supervisor/Principal Investigator for this facility, this person will work closely with the participating laboratories within the Department of Biological Sciences to prepare samples and carry out sequencing runs on a daily basis, perform quality control checks and initial pipeline analysis of data, and maintain data storage files. Additional tasks will include general laboratory maintenance and operations.
Other Work/Responsibilities
Performs clerical duties including filing, ordering supplies, preparing statistics and other activities as assigned. Prepares and maintains adequate stock of reagents, standards, and control materials for the performance of testing at assigned workstation and notifies supervisor of any shortages or problems.
