Job Description Summary:
The Biostatistics Center is an off-campus research facility of The George Washington University located in Rockville, Maryland. The Biostatistics Center serves as the coordinating center for large scale multi-center clinical trials and epidemiological studies funded by federal agencies including the National Institutes of Health. This Research Assistant position works as a member of the coordinating center team supporting research project, “D.C. Cohort Longitudinal HIV Study (DC Cohort)”. In this role, you will be a member of the DC Cohort team and your work will be vitally important to the project. The research assistant works independently as well as collaboratively with the research team and external members of the study group focused on data and study management activities. The research team provides expertise in the design, management and reporting as the Biostatistical Research and Coordinating Center for the DC Cohort, primarily related to studying people living with HIV. The research assistant will maintain knowledge and experience in the conduct of longitudinal cohort studies as well as data science and problem solving skills.
Essential duties include:
  • Maintains detailed knowledge of research study protocols, manuals of procedures and other study documents, to ensure compliance with study procedures and objectives.
  • Performs database management, regular data quality checks (editing and auditing) for the common measures; reviews in detail output and reconciliation tables.
  • Assists statisticians and project managers in determining research studies’ data needs and to formulate approaches to meet them. Includes providing programming support for the external reports and for publications.
  • Generate and maintains study reports for use by internal research staff and by the broader research group including clinical center program coordinators, Principal Investigators and Co-Investigators.
  • Assists statisticians with the creation of datasets for tracking and statistical purposes that incorporate multiple data sources. This may include organizing and managing data for preliminary statistical analyses.
  • Documents and summarizes data set content and technical details through metadata and data dictionaries to transfer knowledge to other research staff and statisticians as well as for public or repository release data sets.
  • Program ad-hoc and periodic reports for monitoring activities, data quality and resources
  • Participates in committees pertaining to data management system and website development. Participates in staff meetings, as required.
  • Answers questions and solves problems individually or in collaboration with colleagues; provides prompt, complete resolution and follow through.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

  • Strong organizational and communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Looking for a problem solver who can both take initiative and work effectively within the group.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Previous research experience in clinical trials/data management with quantitative skills.
  • Programming experience in one or more of the following software: SAS, R, MySQL, Javascript, and/or CSS.
  • Technical writing skills for program documentation.
  • Experience and knowledge of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
Typical Hiring Range $20.01 - $26.39 per hour How is pay for new employees determined at GW?
