Job Summary

The Research Assistant will provide technical assistance to the mouse and cryo-electron microscopy projects in the Chen lab at Caltech.

Essential Job Duties

  • Manage mouse colonies for the lab and get trained for basic surgery operations (example: taking out specific tissues).
  • Get trained in cryoEM and learn how to operate Focus Ion Beam-Scanning Electron Microscopy (as a final goal).
  • Assist lab members for their mouse experiments.
  • Place orders for lab purchases and assist lab procedures, i.e., set-up equipment, prepare samples, specimens, solutions, reagents, cultures, etc.
  • Diagnose and notify principal investigator and/or research personnel of any problems and/or issues related to equipment, research etc.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of laboratory and/or equipment cleaning products to assist personnel in multiple laboratory settings; may arrange for laboratory equipment to be cleaned or repaired.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology or related field.
  • Must have hands-on wet lab experience. 
  • Must understand basic workflow and operations of laboratory research processes.
  • Must be diligent and responsible for their own work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Prior experience in mouse breeding and basic surgery.
  • Prior experience in cryo-electron microscopy.
