Research Assistant - Arabic Paratexts Transcription Project

Job Summary:

Part-Time research assistant for a grant project that involves transcribing and analyzing Arabic manuscript notes.

Job Description:

Matthew L. Keegan is seeking a part-time summer research assistant who has experience transcribing paratextual elements in pre-modern Arabic manuscripts. This assistantship is part of a sub-grant project that studies reading notes and marginalia entitled "Paratextual Prestige and the Social Life of Islamic Scholarly Manuscripts." The research assistant will transcribe audition notes, reading certificates, and marginalia. An excellent command of Arabic and an ability to transcribe manuscript notes are crucial to the work. Research assistants will also track down biographical data from medieval sources and conduct other relevant research tasks.

The assistantship pays $23/hour for 15 hours per week. Depending on student availability, the assistantship may last between six and ten weeks, and the particular timeline of the internship is flexible. The assistant will check in with the PI weekly and report their progress on transcription and other research activities.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

Must be able to read Arabic manuscripts and locate biographies.

Must be currently enrolled in a graduate studies program or be accepted into such a program with an anticipated 2024 start.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
