Position Focus:

The Research Assistant position will join the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence to work on two main research projects that forward the science and application of emotional intelligence with students and adults. The first is a randomized control trial of the RULER Approach to Social Emotional Learning for High Schools, led by Dr. Jessica Hoffmann, to investigate both student and educator emotional intelligence, well-being, and performance outcomes over time.

The second project will be supporting Dr. Marc Brackett with research pertaining to emotion science, including the development of new scales of emotion mindsets, and understanding the value of having an emotions mentor for adult and child well-being.


Essential Duties

1. Researches and collects data through site or home visit intakes; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for research projects. 2. Interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Modifies and plans research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments. Assists in research design. 3. Writes and edits material for publication and presentation. Reports on status of research activities. Oversees and instructs research and support staff on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance. 4. Schedules and coordinates research activities. Identifies and recruits study participants. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. 5. May assist in preparing financial information and monitoring budgets. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.


Required Education and Experience

Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Knowledge of emotional intelligence, emotion skill development, and school-based SEL approaches.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated ability working with quantitative and qualitative data (survey building, coding, basic data cleaning and analyses); familiarity with Qualtrics and SPSS preferred.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability in a fast-paced laboratory setting, managing a variety of project tasks, documents, workflow, working collaboratively, navigating competing priorities and meeting deadlines.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Familiarity with school-based research practices, such as secure data storage and participant confidentiality, and creating and maintaining Human Subjects protocols.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), attention to detail, and flexibility.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

M.A. or M.Ed in related field (e.g. psychology, development, education), and/or work experience in psychological and educational settings that has prepared the candidate for applied psychological science within the U.S. education space. Experience with Qualtrics and SPSS.
