Position Focus:

This is a Research Assistant I position in the Ranganathan Research Lab (RRL) at the West Haven VA Health Care System in West Haven, 900 Campbell Ave West Haven Ct. This is the Yale medical school campus. This position would be working out of both sites assisting the research lab in investigating the biological basis of cannabis dependence, schizophrenia, psychotic disorders and effectiveness of medications by conducting clinical, biological and treatment studies with individuals who meet study criteria.


Essential Duties

1. Researches and collects data through site or home visit intakes; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments. 2. Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports. 3. Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities. 4. Recruits study participants and ensures that subject recruitment and follow-up are completed per protocol procedures. 5. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. May assist research and support staff. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.


Required Education and Experience

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Ability to be professional, organized, have good critical thinking skills, good oral written and verbal skills to be able to collect clinical and neurobiological data through various research methods and procedures such as: computer, behavioral and cognitive assessments, and regulatory documents.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to be able to prioritize, to work efficiently and effectively. Must have excellent trouble shooting and multi-tasking ability. Ability to use good judgment.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to comprehend research protocols and procedures and apply research support as indicated. Ability to collect and enter scientific data and assist research team with excellent computer skills, including and required: Word, Excel, Power Point.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to receive constructive feedback, ability to work well with other and be part of a large work team. Flexibility to work at different work sites. Ability to be comfortable speaking to subjects, clinicians and staff in an effective and personable manner.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to maintain research equipment and space such as EEG, ECG, neuroscience booths, source documents, cognitive. computers and tools.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and/or Neuroscience. Experience working in a research environment and collecting clinical data. Experience with R, MATLAB. Prior experience in a research lab.
