Department Background

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. The Department of Animal Science’s mission is to discover and disseminate new knowledge about the biology and management of domestic animals and to apply this knowledge to benefit society.  Our department is devoted to undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, extension and outreach.

Position Summary

The primary purpose for this position is to conduct both commercial farm-based and campus-based research involving dairy cattle. The incumbent will be responsible for data collection on both commercial farm-based and campus-based research studied involving dairy cattle, communicating, and coordinating with other members of the PI research group, and completing tasks beyond field work in a prompt manner. Typical responsibilities would include collecting samples, assessing dairy cattle health, coordinate with farm staff when conducting research, recording, and processing data into databases, preparing summaries of data, and conducting other tasks beyond field work. Typical responsibilities for campus-based research will include working with the staff of the Cornell Dairy Research Center and other members of the PI research group to conduct research studies, including determining animals for study enrollment, collecting samples, processing data into spreadsheets or databases for analysis, and preparing summaries of data.

This is full-time 39/h/week, three-month term position contingent on the availability of funding and successful performance.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma and up to 1-year relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working either on a dairy farm, in an agribusiness support role working with dairy farms, or conducting research in a dairy farm setting.
  • Ability to see projects through to completion.
  • Demonstrated skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and written and oral communication.
  • Excellent command of the English language with strong verbal and written skills.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work with diverse audiences in group and one on-one settings.
  • Proven organizational and time-management skills.
  • Effective leadership and teamwork skills.
  • Fundamental competence in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.S. in Animal Science with demonstrated focus in dairy cattle management.
  • Two to three years of experience working either on a dairy farm, in an agribusiness support role working with dairy farms, or conducting research in a dairy farm setting.
  • Valid NYS driver’s license.
  • Proficiency in DairyComp 305 Herd Management Software.
  • Proficiency in other on-farm dairy cattle technology systems (such as but not limited to SCR and Afimilk).
  • Basic proficiency in Spanish.
