Religion and Public Life Humanitarian Action Fellow in the Religious Literacy and the Professions Initiative (RLPI) at Harvard Divinity School
As a Religion and Public Life (RPL) Fellow, you will join a cohort of Religious Literacy and the Professions Fellows who will work closely with Dr. Diane L. Moore, Dr. Hussein Rashid, other faculty, and staff colleagues in service of the Certificate in Religion and Public Life (CRPL).
The CRPL at Harvard Divinity School offers MDiv and MTS students the opportunity to explore professional pathways outside of traditional ministry or academic scholarship. The certificate is anchored by a cohort of Religious Literacy and the Professions Fellows working in close collaboration with RPL faculty to support coursework, internships and capstone projects designed to provide students the tools, skills, and experience to advance the public understanding of religion in a range of professional fields.
Religious Literacy and the Professions Fellows are experienced professionals in their respective fields with a commitment to supporting HDS students in their professional discernment. Fellows do not require training or background in religious studies but must bring interest and commitment to advancing the public understanding of religion in their own field and in the broader cultural context.
Religious Literacy and the Professions Fellows currently represent six professions: secondary education, journalism, government, humanitarian action, organizing, and arts and popular culture.
Responsibilities include:
  • Joining approximately 15 hours of preparatory work in the summer, including two one-hour webinar meetings with the RLPI Fellows cohort;
  • Submitting a syllabus for review;
  • Utilizing Harvard network resources, including email and Canvas;
  • Co-teaching the Religious Literacy and the Professions fall course with Dr. Moore and other Fellows. This includes:
  • running your own weekly 75-minute section for 8 weeks focused on humanitarian action;
  • responding in a timely way to all student work related to your section;
  • helping students construct their final projects for the course;
  • participating in occasional plenary class “drop-ins;”

  • Being available to mentor students during office hours for two hours each week at a time of your choosing during both the fall and spring terms;
  • Working with the RPL staff to identify and facilitate internship opportunities related to humanitarian action;
  • Attending weekly meetings during the course of the Fall semester;
  • Participating in individual meetings with RPL staff for student support;
  • Expectation of being able to travel to campus 1-2 times during the academic year, one of these travel dates will be in the early part of the Fall semester;
  • Advising students about capstone projects and potentially serving as advisors to capstone projects.

    • This position is a part-time, virtual, non-resident academic appointment for the 2024-2025 academic year. The term of the fellowship begins August 1, 2024 and ends on May 31, 2025.
    Basic Qualifications
    • Demonstrated leadership within field, with at least 5-10 years of experience
    • Strong interest in advancing the public understanding of religion
    • Enthusiasm for working with HDS students
    • Committed to meeting deadlines
    • Being a responsive partner to feedback
    • Experience in teaching at undergraduate or graduate level preferred but not a requirement
    • Interest or training in religious studies/religious literacy preferred but not a requirement
