Description of Work Unit
Veterinary Teaching Hospital
At the CSU VTH, we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. The Neurology service instructs professional and paraprofessional Veterinary Medical students, interns and residents in a surgical and clinical setting with emphasis on practical applications of neurology and neurosurgery, emergency procedures and clinical treatment of neurological cases.

Position Summary
This position is a Neurology care technician providing nursing care, triage, and critical care support to patients. By providing instruction and support to professional and paraprofessional Veterinary Medical students, interns, residents, and staff in dealing in the specialized care and treatment of neurological cases, they will uphold the missions of the VTH in both teaching and service excellence.
This is an essential worker position and must be willing and able to report to work as directed to perform essential and/or emergency services without delay or interruption.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Registered as a Veterinary Technician (VT) or Provisional Veterinary Technician (PVT) through the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA).
  • Graduate of accredited veterinary technician program with greater than two (2) years’ experience in veterinary medicine. *Please note, a transcript or diploma must be attached to this application to demonstrate graduation from the vet tech program.
  • SUBSTITUTIONS: Candidates can qualify without graduation from a veterinary technician program if they demonstrate 3+ years of veterinary medicine experience.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Essential Duties

Duty/Responsibility
  • Performs the following: sedation and recovery, blood draws, IVC placement, safe positioning for CSF taps, restraint on painful animals, euthanasia assistance, surgical clips and peri-operative antibiotic preparation, urinary catheter placement, TPR’s, neurologic exams and Cytosar injections. 
  • Organizing and scheduling incoming appointments and assisting with appointments in the exam rooms. 
  • Autonomy in scheduling and conducting technician-lead appointments, and relaying appropriate follow-up information to clinicians. 
  • Creating personalized, accurate, and representative financial estimates to clients regarding recommended procedures and treatments. 
  • Enter ancillary and/or consulting service orders correctly, including anesthesia, surgery, clinical pathology, diagnostic lab, and diagnostic imaging. 
  • Transportation of patients from the parking lot to exam room and throughout the hospital. 
  • Follow appropriate protocols when working with potential for zoonotic and infectious agents. 
  • Basic foundation of neurosurgery and equipment. 
  • Acts as the second liaison to providing surgery with vital information with incoming cases.

Duty/Responsibility
  • Performs the following: 
    • Ensure accurate and prompt charging, prints stickers and various forms, completes or oversees students when ordering appropriate tests and ensure correct sample submission requests, pharmacy refills and FAX refills to various outside pharmacies. 
    • Updates logs and spreadsheets used by the department. 
    • Uploads patient videos to our teams folder and organizes them so that they are easy to find. 
    • Coordinate sending diagnostic imaging/MRI links to all clients and associated veterinarians. 
    • Catalog patient videos and pictures related to their clinical evaluation. 
    • Answers rounds room phone, takes and relays messages, facilitates client visitations. 
    • Manages patient drop-off and discharges, including admission/dismissal-related tasks. 
    • Accurately document all patient-related communications. 
    • Proper cleanup and disinfection during and/or after appointments. 
    • Restocks items needed in exam and rounds rooms. 
    • At all times, keeps exams room properly cleaned and orderly. 
    • Stocks various items in the O.R. 
    • Takes dirty laundry to Central Supply and retrieves clean laundry. 
    • Takes sterile packs and equipment to Central Supply, returns sterile packs and supplies to O.R. Maintains and cleans clippers and blades. 
    • Sends instruments or equipment out for repair.

Duty/Responsibility
  • Assists visiting house officers, new residents, and third and fourth year veterinary students in completing a neurologic examination. Teaches appropriate patient restraint, blood draws, blood pressure, sedation monitoring, urinary catheter placement. 
  • Guides and instructs learners through their neurologic exams with demonstrations and explanations at a higher level. 
  • During appointments before the clinician enters, position creates a low-stake learning environment by providing continual guidance and pointers to students as the perform their independent neurologic evaluations, and providing direction when needed as they assign a lesion localization. 
  • In specialized procedures, e.g. 
  • CSF collection, position communicates the rationale and technique of the procedure, including safe sample handling.
