Department Description

The Adult Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at UCSF Health on the Parnassus Campus is a 16 bed Intensive Care unit which provides care to complex critically ill patients and their families with complicated surgical conditions, liver and renal dysfunction, liver / kidney / pancreas transplantation, as well as severe medical conditions such as sepsis, acute lung injury, acute pancreatitis, oncologic diseases, autoimmune disorders, and critically ill obstetric conditions.

This unit is comprised of a community of skilled, innovative, collaborative, and caring critical care clinicians. The nursing staff have opportunities for specialty training and expertise in continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), manual proning, and end-of-life/palliative care. The critical care team includes nurses, physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory care practitioners, social workers, nutritionists, rehab therapists and pharmacists all with expertise in meeting the needs of critically ill patients and their families.

The Surgical ICU has received multiple awards with the most recent being the UCSF Team PRIDE Award (2021), the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence (2010) and the Society of Critical Care Medicines Family-Centered Care Award (2009). Many nurses on this unit are recognized for receiving local and national honors and awards including five UCSF Distinguished Nurse Awards and AACN's Excellence in Leadership Award. 

Nurses are active in improving the care of critically ill patients through innovative projects, evidence-based care performance improvement and clinical research.

Advancement of professional practice and education are priorities for our unit with opportunities such as an active unit based clinical practice, healthy work environment, patient and family relations, and professional development councils.


Required Qualifications

  • Two years of recent ICU experience
  • American Heart Association BLS
  • American Heart Association ACLS
  • Current Registered Nurse Licensure in the State of California

Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
