Job Summary

Under the direction of the Ward 86 Nurse Managers, the RN will work in a primary care setting. The RN is responsible for nursing care, including, but not limited to, providing direct patient care, coordinating care, providing education and coaching for a panel of patients within an interdisciplinary team structure. In addition to direct nursing care, the RN will participate in quality improvement initiatives, attend meetings, and sit on clinic committees as directed.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

Ward 86, the HIV/AIDS Clinic at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) campus has been a leader and innovator in field of HIV care since the beginning of the epidemic. Ward 86 is the largest clinic providing primary medical care for people living with HIV for the San Francisco Health Network (SFHN) and also provide preventive services to patients at-risk for HIV infection, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).  Ward 86 provides care to approximately 2400 patients living with HIV, with over 22,000 clinical encounters a year. Services are offered through a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach, addressing primary medical and HIV care, urgent care, mental health evaluation and treatment, substance use assessment, treatment and referrals, HIV prevention services, and HIV specialty care needs.

The Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is an internationally recognized global leader in clinical care, research, and education. With its home-base located at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG), the Division has been ranked as the top facility in the country for AIDS care since 1983. The Division’s work is featured frequently in the media, and it is often visited by numerous international, national, state, and local dignitaries and delegations. The Division consists of approximately 36 faculty members, 11 fellows/postdoctoral scholars and 170 academic and staff employees.  It is the largest Division of the Department of Medicine (DOM) at ZSFG, with a total expenditure budget of approximately $52 million dollars.


Required Qualifications

  • BSN
  • Six (6) months+ of clinical experience
  • Minimum twelve (12) months experience providing direct services administering injectable medications to people living with HIV for treatment and people at risk of HIV acquisition for prevention.
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • Advanced knowledge of harm reduction principles and experience working within a harm reduction patient care model, such as syringe access programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year experience with HIV prevention counseling (PrEP/PEP).
  • One (1) year experience providing direct services to people experiencing psychiatric crisis: mental health status and safety assessments, and 5150 status.
  • HIV/AIDS Certified Registered Nurse (ACRN) Certification.
  • Experience working with patients experiencing homelessness or unstable housing.
  • Experience working with patients with mental health and/or substance use problems.

License/Certification

  • CA licensure as Registered Nurse (RN); possession of legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Experience working with patients living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
