Registered Nurse - GI Motility Lab

Job Summary

This is a Registered Nurse position for GI Motility Lab. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating physiological testing at the Gastrointestinal Motility Laboratory. The most commonly performed tests are Esophageal Manometry and 24h pH monitoring (with a catheter or a wireless capsule)/smartpill studies ( 4-6 per day). The nurse provides excellent clinical care, telephone advice, and patient education to the GI Motility Lab patients. The CN will comply with the Medical Center house and Telephone Standards.

The CN should be willing and able to learn new procedures (i.e. bravo, endoflip) as they become available. In addition to performing motility studies, the RN will assist with physician inbox messages, pre and post procedure calls to patients, communications with referring physicians. The CN may be asked to cover general GI nurses when on vacation/sick days

The CN  is accountable for his/her own practice and has primary responsibility for utilizing nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of safe patient care in the outpatient clinical setting. S/he carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required and performs nursing care for patients with complex needs. CN is recognized as a leader and clinical resource and demonstrates investment in the overall forward movement of the practice and organization. CN serves as resource for all clinical staff and initiates and participates in patient and staff education.

The Clinical Nurse must have the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks and work well with staff, patients, and providers.  A high degree of independence, initiative, assertiveness, and diplomacy are necessary in dealing with faculty, staff, and patients in a complex environment.  S/he works with physician leadership in setting and accomplishing annual goals.  S/he works with staff to develop, monitor and maintain systems pertaining to all aspects of nursing care for the practice.  The clinical nurse ensures a safe environment for patients and staff.  The clinical nurse is responsible for providing direct nursing care to patients in the GI Motility Lab. Duties include review of incoming referrals, communicating with patients via phone calls and APeX messages.  The Clinical Nurse communicates with the referring practices and patients as needed for patient appointments. The clinical nurse provides education to patients regarding their illnesses, procedure preparation and patient medications.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience performing physiological testing at the Gastrointestinal Motility Laboratory.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care inpatient capacity or in a similar ambulatory care position.
  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
