Department Description
The Intensive Care Nursery (ICN), founded in 1964, is a regional tertiary center and has the proud distinction of being one of the first neonatal intensive care units in the world. In addition to caring for extremely premature infants, the ICN also cares for infants with congenital anomalies in need of evaluation and surgical interventions.
The ICN opened the first Neuro Intensive care unit for newborns in 2008. Today, the ICN continues to enjoy a reputation for being at the forefront of innovation in the fields of neonatology and fetal treatment. Neonatologists, neurologists, radiologists and nurses work to improve neuro developmental outcomes in very premature infants and full-term babies who are at high risk of neurological injury or have clinical evidence of encephalopathy, seizures or stroke.
The ICN provides state of the art care for infants with neurological, gastrointestinal, renal and skeletal, cardiac and respiratory diseases. We are one of a few centers in Northern California that provides ECMO and are recognized as an ECMO Center of Excellence.
Staff nurses are the backbone of the ICN. They provide comprehensive, compassionate and highly specialized care to the most fragile of infants and their families. In addition to providing direct patient care, staff nurses participate on unit-level committees, ensuring that each staff member has an active voice in the operation and function of the unit.
