The Registered Nurse 2 delivers patient-family centered care in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service while ensuring population-specific patient care. The Registered Nurse 2 oversees nurses and allied health staff in their daily practice.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                          

  • Assesses assigned patients and evaluates plans to include documentation of nursing care.

  • Reports symptoms and changes in patients’ condition and vital signs. 

  • Modifies patient treatment plans as indicated by patients’ responses, conditions, and physician orders.

  • Reviews, evaluates, and reports diagnostic tests to assess patient’s condition.

  • Consults with physicians and other healthcare professionals related to assigned patients to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans. 

  • Prepares patients for, and assists with examinations, procedures, and treatments. 

  • Considers patient age and culture during patient treatments and provides any needed information regarding treatment plan. 

  • Nurtures a compassionate environment by providing psychological support.

  • Performs appropriate patient tests and safely administers medications within the scope of practice. 

  • Administers and maintains accurate records related to medications and treatments as per regulatory bodies, policies, procedures, and physician orders.

  • Communicates plan of care in a timely manner to patient and family, as well as the appropriate team members, ensuring compliance with all regulatory guidelines (i.e., HIPAA).

  • Uses best practices for transition of patient care.

  • Uses available resources to assist in discharge planning.

  • Plans, prioritizes, and adjusts assignments to accomplish goals and render superior patient care; seeks assistance when needed.

  • Adapts to changing work demands and environment.

  • Safely operates medical equipment.

  • Serves as a preceptor and assists new staff in the provision of care to help them acclimate to the healthcare environment, and a direct patient care role.

  • Provides concise and constructive feedback when needed.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

Education:

Graduate from an accredited school of nursing

Bachelor of Science in nursing required

CGRN preferred

Certification and Licensing:

Registered Nurse License; Basic Life Support Certification (BLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

Experience:

Minimum 2 years of nursing experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology

  • Knowledge of nursing care methods and procedures

  • In-depth knowledge of health and safety guidelines and procedures (i.e., sanitation, decontamination etc.)

  • Excellent patient experience skills

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

Department Specific Functions

Primary Responsibilities of the Gastroenterology (GI) Nurse:

Responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the Gastroenterology (GI) department for all patient populations.  Performs all responsibilities and duties required by the GI department as specific to the scope of service to ensure that the unique nature of the GI patient is addressed.

Planning

Assess patients at intervals as stated in policies and procedures. Pre-procedure nursing assessment includes ensuring that all necessary lab work, imaging, or relevant medical clearances are available and documented in the patient’s chart. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of Pre-Procedure bowel prep methods, ensuring that patients have followed necessary instructions prior to the start of procedure. Develop an individualized GI Procedure patient plan of care.

Implementation

Implement the plan of care by:

Assessing the knowledge level of the patient or designated support person.

Performing interventions to protect the patient from infection.

Protecting the patient from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources.

Performs interventions necessary to ensure that the correct procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level.

Communicating the patient’s status to relevant parties throughout the continuum of care.

Administering medications safely and correctly.

Performs interventions to maintain the patient’s wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels.

Performs interventions to maintain the status of the patient’s genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems and fluid, electrolyte, and acid- base balances at or above baseline levels.

Perform interventions to ensure the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate post procedure period.

Provides education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure.

Involves the patient or designated support person actively in decisions affecting his or her plan of care and the rehabilitation process.

Protects the patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy.

Provides age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice.

Provides consistent and comparable care regardless of the setting.

Reports and documents patient responses or outcomes resulting from nursing and surgical interventions. Delegate tasks according to the state Nurse Practice Act and job descriptions. Coordinates special needs and requirements as it relates so specific GI Procedures. Ensures the preparation of the procedure room regarding cleanliness, working condition of equipment, and adequacy of supplies. Practices and ensures that cost effective measures are maintained while preparing for GI procedures. Implements the clinical and technical aspects of procedural nursing care in accordance with established policies and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of GI procedures and exams by following appropriate nursing standards as evidenced by care delivery. Responds to changes in GI procedures in an organized and calm manner. Demonstrates the ability to care for the patient with continuous cardiac monitoring including rhythm identification, interpretation, and follow through with appropriate intervention. Demonstrates the ability to titrate intravenous medications according to the patient’s hemodynamic status as applicable. Demonstrates knowledge of anesthetic agents, techniques, and actions, assisting the anesthesia provider as necessary. Demonstrates competency in monitoring patients receiving IV conscious sedation (if applicable). Demonstrates knowledge and safe use of routine and specialty equipment. Demonstrates knowledge of safe patient positioning according to established policy and procedures. Anticipates needs of procedural team as evidenced by advance knowledge and timely preparation of pertinent instrumentation and/or supplies. Cares for and documents all specimens and cultures in accordance with established policy and procedure. Demonstrates knowledge of and documents administration of blood and blood products according to established policy and procedure. Demonstrates accurate and complete electronic and written procedural nursing care within established timeframes. Demonstrates continuity of nursing care by coordinating postoperative management with post anesthesia nursing team, transferring care as applicable. Provides inclusive report to relief and/or post anesthesia nursing team based on assessment, reassessment, and patient’s response to surgical intervention. Implements assigned activities to maintain established turnover timeframes. Initiates the daily restocking and maintenance of assigned procedure room in a timely and efficient manner.

Evaluation

Evaluate and documents the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes by reviewing and evaluating the effectiveness of plan. Revises or updates the patient care plan based on patient responses, progress toward goals and/or change in medical/surgical status. Monitors aseptic technique and implements corrective action as necessary in accordance with established policy and procedures. Monitor outcomes of patients undergoing new procedures or interventions.

Professional Accountability

Participates in quality review and performance improvement projects. Maintains all required competencies, including documentation of continuing education. Acts as a patient advocate by maintaining privacy and confidentiality of individuals and protected health information per hospital policy. Maintains professional licensure and certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS) in active status. Pursues professional growth by participating in a professional organization. Actively engages in activities aimed at meeting the operating room efficiency metrics such as Turnaround Time (TAT) and First Case On Time Starts (FCOTS) in a safe and timely manner. Attends departmental meetings and mandatory in-services. Acts in the role of preceptor for new staff. Demonstrates dependability and reliability by promptly reporting to work as scheduled. Attempts to resolve physician, patient, and visitor complaints, referring unresolved issues to managers. Cross-trains to other nursing units, floating as necessary to Evening or Night Shifts. Participates in quality review and performance improvement projects. Displays courtesy toward customers by introducing self and addressing customer by name. Works effectively and cooperatively in groups/teams to ensure the delivery of quality patient care.
