Responsibilities*

This position will serve in the role of Referral Coordinator and Patient Account Representative.

In this role, you will provide exceptional patient centered service to patients, families and providers.  You will coordinate and facilitate between Physician and Insurance Companies regarding authorization and referrals for specialty care services. You will also be responsible for Billing, Invoices and Insurance Billing Clerical Work. Acting as a primary resource for providers, staff, patients and external insurances, you will be responsible for:

Referrals and Authorizations

  • Processing referrals using established insurance company guidelines.
  • Obtaining authorizations, precertification, prescriptions for therapies, and benefit verifications.
  • Managing orders and referral work queues, and responding to patient referral issues in a timely manner.
  • Facilitating appointment scheduling for primary and specialty services.
  • Providing relevant insurance information and updates to staff, providers and managers (e.g. managed care changes, terminated contracts).
  • Working closely with providers, clerical and clinical staff on referral processes to understand and proactively identify and resolve referral issues.
  • Assisting in developing new process and procedures within the BCSC.
  • Mentoring, orienting and supporting new staff and assisting with on-the-job training.
  • Process cash collection and prepare deposits

Billing and Invoices

  • Enter CPT codes into scheduling system as needed, to facilitate support for Patient Account Representatives.
  • Work with physicians you will adhere to service scheduling procedures.
  • Attend regular Revenue Cycle meetings and summarize information pertaining to our department/service.

Insurance Billing Clerical Work

  • Handle daily work queues
  • Track and log reversed charges.
  • Obtain proper insurance address and documentation to insure correct charges.
  • Serve as a representative of the designated service team, participate in/serve on various committees, workgroups as needed.
  • Coordinate with other department schedulers to optimize use of services across Michigan Medicine.

Required Qualifications*
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 3 – 4 years of experience.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Prior experience performing complex scheduling.
  • Familiarity with obtaining medical records or professional medical billing.
  • Financial counseling experience for healthcare patients.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work well within a team setting.
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Demonstrates active listening, written, verbal and information technology skills.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Experience working within a large, complex health care setting. 
  • Familiarity with UMHS electronic medical record systems.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures.

Work Schedule

This is a 40 hour per week position, working primarily 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.


Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
