South Dakota State University’s (SDSU) Hilton M. Briggs Library is excited to welcome applications for two (2) positions at the Assistant Librarian faculty rank. Join a dynamic and forward-thinking Public Services team committed to empowering every member of the SDSU community and contribute to the academic success of our students and faculty. Both positions report to the Head of Public Services, are located onsite in Brookings, South Dakota , and are full-time and benefits-eligible with a negotiated contract year of 10, 11, or 12-months.
The Hilton M. Briggs Library fosters academic excellence, collaborative endeavor, creative scholarship, student engagement, and lifelong curiosity. The library serves all SDSU academic disciplines and holds approximately 700,000 bound volumes and 600,000 government documents and provides access to over 100,000 electronic journals as well as e-books and streaming videos. The library building offers a variety of collaborative and individual workspaces.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide liaison, outreach, and support to students, staff, and faculty in assigned disciplines to ensure collections and services meet faculty and student needs.
  • Provide both in-person and online reference service and research consultation, including some evening and weekend hours.
  • Participate in the library’s instruction program, both in person and virtually, by teaching general information literacy skills and advanced subject-specific research skills to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Maintain current knowledge and understanding regarding scholarly communication, research, and pedagogical theories and practices, particularly as they relate to assigned subject areas.
  • Engage and participate in ongoing assessment of student learning, library collections, and services.
  • Collaborate with other librarians in the creation, implementation, and assessment of learning objectives for information literacy and student learning across campus.
  • Serve the library, SDSU, and the profession through committee work and other contributions.

SALARY RANGE:
The minimum salary for a 10-month contract is $61,000. 11 and 12-month contracts are also negotiable. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 10 hours of annual leave each month, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and 11paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or equivalent by the time of hire.
  • Experience providing general reference service.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging technologies.
  • Familiarity with issues and trends in libraries as well as higher education.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills as well as a strong service orientation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • One or more years of experience working in academic libraries.
  • Ability to use software applications and tools to create instructional content.
  • Experience in instruction in face-to-face, online, and blended environments, including the design of interactive instructional materials and activities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with technologies such as web authoring tools, social media, digital learning objects, screen casting, and LibGuides.
  • Familiarity with methods and software used to conduct user tests and analyses, and other research methods designed to assess user experiences and needs.
  • Familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools.
  • Knowledge of information resources in the health and/or life sciences.
