6pm – 6am (12 hours shifts) Week 1 work Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Week 2 work Monday, Thursday & Friday. Rotation repeats every other week. Rotation includes working 36 hours one week and 48 the next. (subject to change)

Position Summary
This recruitment is for three (3) Public Safety Telecommunicator positions. By applying, you will be considered for all three (3) positions #00036290, #00037539 and #00061821.
The primary purpose of this position is to operate the UNC Chapel Hill Emergency 9-1-1 Communications Center effectively and efficiently 24 hours a day, 365 days a year ensuring law enforcement response, emergency response and other miscellaneous needs. This consists of collecting, processing, prioritizing and disseminating information from and to multiple resources and agencies under stressful conditions. Responsibilities of this position will consist of the following: 1. Dispatching operations for emergency and non-emergency assistance to the University community and surrounding agencies. 2. Processing maintenance requests and contacting on-call trades with Facilities Services infrastructure during a public health emergency. 3. Serving as a 24/7 point of contact while most other University operations have been suspended.4. Peer training.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High School diploma and sufficient experience to demonstrate ability to work under pressure. Additional Education and Experience will be necessary for progressive steps (Journey and Advanced). Requires certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment. May require Basic Telecommunicator Certification in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Candidate must hold or obtain within probationary period certification of the Division of Criminal Information Network and maintain during tenure of position. Candidate must hold or be able to obtain Telecommunicator Certification within the first year of employment. This position is necessary to ensure continued, uninterrupted University operations during periods of adverse weather and/or emergency situations, including those that require the University to close. As such, the employee will be required to report to work according to their usual schedule, or upon notification to report outside of the usual work schedule. This position is also considered a ‘mandatory’ employee position. Mandatory employees may be directed by their supervisor to report to work at a designated University worksite other than their personal residence at specific dates and times to perform particular responsibilities. Must be able to operate multiple computer systems simultaneously including CAD, DCIN, Alarm systems, computerized multi-line/channel telephone, and radio systems while performing other multi-task duties on a continuous basis. Applicant must have advanced written and verbal communication skills. Must pass in-depth background investigation and have the ability to work efficiently under pressure. UNC-Chapel Hill Police Department maintains a 24-hour operation, 7 days a week; therefore work schedule varies depending on operational needs. Must have a valid North Carolina Driver’s License in order to operate a University State-owned vehicle in the event of an emergency, provide dispatch from other work locations if necessary, or to attend required training.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Previous Emergency Communications Dispatch experience and computer experience is strongly preferred.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Candidate must hold or be able to obtain Telecommunicator Certification within the first year of employment. May be required to obtain Communications Training Officer certification.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Applicant must meet physical requirements of the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards including physical examination and drug screening. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time with or without an accommodation. May be required to obtain Communications Training Officer certification.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
