Incumbents may perform some or all of these duties or other job-related duties as required.


Accomplishes departmental law enforcement objectives through effective supervision of team or work unit consisting of lower-level public safety officers (i.e., ensures satisfactory performance, discipline & development of team & team members based upon task/incident & productivity analysis in conjunction with management directives, counsels & evaluates team members), through providing of effective interteam & intro-team communication & through coordination of team unit public safety activities (e.g., crime prevention, criminal interception, apprehension & investigation, public order maintenance).

Resolves problems and/or needs & evaluates work performance and techniques used (e.g., ensure that work is done properly and on time) in order to maintain departmental standards.

Maintains liaison & coordinates with supervisors & department administrators regarding public safety activities; instructs other department personnel & others in university community.


Performs law enforcement tasks (e.g., investigations, public order maintenance) as assigned.

Major Work Characteristics:
Knowledge of (1) criminal & civil law, rules & regulations dealing with universities, (2) university law enforcement (i.e., patrolling & enforcement techniques, laws of evidence, methods of arrest, search & seizure & investigation, handling of prisoners), (3) public & human relations, (4) departmental regulations outlining standards of ethics & uniform dress & care, (5) first-aid & emergency care, (6) police mission, (7) labor relations, (8) manpower planning, (9) employee training & development, (10) direct supervision, (11) safety practices, (12) work performance counseling, (13) interviewing; skill in (14) use & maintenance of firearm & equipment; ability to (15) deal with many variables & determine specific action and/or conclusions, (16) use statistical analysis, (17) write instructions & specifications regarding proper uses of equipment & proper enforcement procedures, (18) gather, collate, classify information about data, people or things, (19) establish effective work atmosphere as large section chief, (20)
communicate clearly, (21) plan & control work, (22) delegate, (23) use time effectively, (24) demonstrate agility & physical fitness.


Minimum Class Requirements: (Including license, if any.)
Completion of Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Program & Peace Officer Certification one year subsequent to employment. Associates degree in law enforcement or related field or sixty hours of coursework. Twenty-four months of supervisory experience as a law enforcement officer is preferred. Minimum age 21. Valid Ohio Drivers license required. Eligibility for faithful performance bond. No conviction record or felony or crime of moral turpitude.


Unusual Working conditions:
Law enforcement hazards. Rotation of duty hours & days.


Training & Development:
Successfully complete job knowledge/skills training as periodically assigned by Chief of Police and other campus administrator.
