Department Department of Applied Ecology
About the Department
Did you know that every cup of coffee represents three Applied Ecology sub-units and multiple faculty? The Center for Applied Aquatic Ecology monitors the aquifers that supply RDU, the NC Fish and Wildlife Co-Op Unit works with Puerto Rican Farmers to improve the sustainability and yield of their coffee crops, and the SE Climate Adaptation Center helps predict future environments for crops and the pollinators they rely on.
Are you aware that every year, more and more of our traditions are threatened by pollution, climate change, and the loss of wild spaces? Our department’s research is developed with community leaders, land managers, and stakeholders to ensure that our natural heritage can be passed down to the next generation.
Have you thought about the delicate balance of ecology that is required to enjoy a well-balanced plate of food? Our work encompasses the entire journey, from monitoring soil and water equality, researching pesticide impacts on nature and agricultural workers, and conserving habitats for pollinators, to discovering the best yeasts for beers, breads, and cheeses.
The Department of Applied Ecology integrates aspects of the broader fields of biology, ecology, genetics, toxicology, conservation, and living resource management into a focused unit that employs novel approaches to confront local problems and global challenges. The department engages in highly collaborative research, education, and extension efforts that offer direct, practical solutions to current challenges in environmental and human well-being.
