Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The Secretary of the University department reports to the Chancellor and is responsible for overseeing administrative and operational matters related to strategic initiatives and special projects for the University. This unit serves as the University’s liaison between internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to: the Board of Trustees, Student Government, Employee Forum, and Faculty Council. The University’s State Affairs and Federal Affairs departments report to the Secretary of the University – together the units jointly advocate for the University’s priorities affecting higher education, while cultivating and building on relationships with the NC State legislature and U.S. Congress. Overseeing UNC Public Affairs, this unit serves as the primary liaison between the University and policymakers at the federal and state levels. Charged with developing and advancing the University’s policy agenda and expanding strong partnerships with our public officials. |
Position Summary | The Policy Coordinator, Public Affairs, reports to the Director of Federal Affairs and the Director of State Affairs within the Office of Public Affairs. The person chosen for this role will be responsible for researching, reviewing, and staying up to date with legislative activities affecting the University and higher education policy nationwide. This early-career position involves tasks such as drafting newsletters, summarizing legislation, and creating concise and informative documents for both internal and external stakeholders. Responsibilities will also include maintenance of the social media accounts and website for the Office of Public Affairs. This role provides an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in the intersection of policy and communication to assist in the university’s advocacy efforts at the Federal and State levels. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Strong written and verbal communication skills. Attention to detail and ability to produce accurate and well-organized documents. Interest in public policy issues and a commitment to staying informed about legislative changes. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Communications, or a related field. |
