Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students.  Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate’s degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university.  SWCC also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking a Foreign Language Instructor for the 2024 Trio Upward Bound Summer Discovery program. The selected applicant will be responsible for creating and delivering effective instruction in one of the following languages: French, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, German, Russian, Italian, and/or American Sign Language. Other Languages may be considered. The instructor will focus on imparting language proficiency, cultural understanding, and facilitating active engagement with the chosen language.
The Upward Bound Summer Program will take place June 17-July 12, 2024, with classes being Monday-Thursday each week. Mandatory staff in-service will be held on June 13. The selected applicant will be allotted flexible hours prior to June 17 to develop their curriculum and complete mandatory online trainings. There may be additional opportunities to work on Fridays during the Summer program and/or the week of July 15-21.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Strong interpersonal skills to help engage, provide support to, and motivate students
Effective oral and written communication skills
Effective problem-solving skills
Excellent organizational skills
Proficient in use of Microsoft Office, Zoom, Google Classroom and Google docs
Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently as well as part of a team
Proficiency in speaking and writing one of the following languages: French, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, German, Russian, Italian, and/or American Sign Language
Additional Considerations
Bachelor’s degree in language arts, education, or related field
Experience teaching at the middle school, high school or college level
Personal background and/or relate to the challenges of disadvantaged youth
Operation of a State Vehicle No
