Nature of Responsibilities: Full time one-year appointment for a post-graduate, pre-licensed psychology resident who works at CAPS providing clinical services and outreach to Duke students. The Post-Doctoral Resident will receive training provided to other staff and may also choose appropriate professional development that enhances their work at CAPS. The resident will receive supervision, may assist the training director with training activities and will participate in weekly case consultation. Residents will provide individual and group counseling services using primarily a brief therapy model. Additionally, residents will conduct intake (TRAC) assessments, crisis interventions, emergency on-call services, case management activities, clinical record keeping and outreach and education activities. Clinical supervision for licensure will be provided.

Supervises Directly: Under supervision of licensed staff, residents may provide training activities for master’s level and doctoral interns.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides individual and group short-term psychotherapy for students.
  • Provides intakes, crisis management, walk-in emergency service, and assumes on-call responsibilities for daytime and evening emergency services.
  • Participates as part of the clinical services team and assists others with case management, clinical team administration and emergency consultation.
  • Assists with other selected facets of counseling center administration such as: research, supervision or outreach.
  • Receives postdoctoral clinical supervision required for North Carolina licensure. Receives administrative supervision and coaching regarding development of professional identity.
  • Maintains clinical records and necessary statistics of psychotherapeutic and other client contacts for licensure purposes.
  • Consults with psychiatrists who provide medication management and collaborates in monitoring psychotropic medication for psychotherapy patients.
  • Consults with parents, physicians, faculty, academic deans, residence life staff, off-campus counseling services, other campus offices and students, when appropriate, and with appropriate authorization to provide quality care to students.
  • Participates in timely documentation utilizing Titanium/Epic/Maestro Care scheduling and electronic records. Works with others in analyses of related local clinical data gathered through this system, and in the collection of data when requested.
  • Participates in CAPS and Student Affairs committees.
  • Attends and participates in regular CAPS staff meetings as appropriate, disposition/clinical team, in-service training, and professional development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or negotiated.
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Holds a completed doctoral level degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA approved program.

    Demonstrates excellence in clinical assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment planning, provision of crisis intervention, brief individual and group therapy and consultation/case management. Additionally requires clinical flexibility and the ability to learn and apply treatment modalities per CAPS policy.

    Demonstrates ability to integrate cultural competence skills in clinical applications when working with diverse student clients, particularly students of color, international students and students representing varying sexual orientations.

    Demonstrates strong cultural competency skills in developmental program planning and outreach with diverse students, particularly with students of color and international students.

    Demonstrates experience/strong motivation and ability to work as part of a highly cohesive and multidisciplinary team in a university counseling center.

    Has experience and/or strong interest in the roles of a university counseling center staff professionals, including individual psychotherapy, group therapy, supervision of master’s and doctoral level graduate students, case management, outreach and consultation, timely record keeping and center administration. 

    Demonstrates developing expertise in suicidal interventions, eating disorders, alcohol/substance abuse, stress and other performance related issues, relationship skills, and/or other developmental issues of college students.


    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    Applicants must have completed the doctorate degree in counseling or clinical psychology prior to the program starting date and must have completed a psychology internship at an APA accredited site. Qualified candidates should have strong clinical skills in brief treatment, assessment, and crisis intervention.


    Experience

    Counseling center experience preferred.
