Primary Purpose of Department
The Counseling Center at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte supports the academic, personal, and interpersonal development of UNC Charlotte students by providing short-term individual and group counseling, psychological assessment, consultation for faculty, staff, parents, and students, and educational programs to the campus community.
Primary Purpose of Position
Under the supervision of the Associate Director for Clinical Services this position provides direct service to students in the form of individual and group therapy, clinical consultation, and crisis intervention; consultation with faculty, staff, students, parents, and others; outreach and crisis response to the campus community; research and evaluation; supervision of trainees; and service to the University.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
  • Conduct individual and group counseling and psychotherapy with students who seek assistance with a broad range of personal problems. Provide clinical consultation to students initiating services at CAPS. Lead psychoeducational workshops for students. Respond to psychological emergencies or crisis situations requiring immediate intervention (e.g., suicidal behavior, student death or injury); provide on-call services during and after regular office hours.
  • Consult with faculty and professional staff who seek assistance dealing with students having behavioral or emotional problems.
  • Participate actively in activities that enhance the mission of the Counseling Center as a practicum, intern and post-doc training site, including supervision of trainees and facilitation of training seminars.
  • Administer and interpret individual psychological tests, personality inventories, and vocational interest inventories. As appropriate and according to individual interests, conduct research projects that pursue questions of applied value for the field of counseling or clinical psychology and the Counseling Center.
  • Provide outreach and psychoeducational programming services to students on topics related to mental health.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Earned Doctorate from an APA-accredited Counseling or Clinical Psychology program.
  • Completion of an APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Knowledge, skills, and experience working with young adults.
  • Knowledge and awareness of intersectionality of diverse identities.
Necessary Certifications/Licenses
Eligibility for licensure as a Psychologist in the State of North Carolina.
Preferred Certifications/Licenses
Completion of national board examination and all hours necessary for licensure as a psychologist in the state of North Carolina.
