Job Summary

Nursing Staff provides direct nursing care to adult and geriatric patients presenting with the full spectrum of psychiatric diagnosis admitted to the Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital, inpatient unit.  Under general supervision of the assigned charge nurse, nursing supervisor and nurse manager, the psychiatric RN performs nursing assessments, administers prescribed medications, and implements established nursing interventions utilizing current clinical knowledge of psychiatric and medical illnesses. The nursing assessment includes but is not limited to, collecting vital signs, current medication list and the patient’s medical and psychiatric histories. From the nursing assessment findings, the nurse establishes and implements the nursing care plan. The nurse updates the nursing care plan and the multi-disciplinary treatment plan as indicated throughout the patient’s admission. The nurse provides teaching and information to patients and families about prescribed medications and illness/symptom management. The Nurse documents all medication administration, nursing assessment findings and nursing interventions in the EMR. 

This position provides on-site clinical oversight for Per Diem Clinical Nurse II’s, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Licensed Psychiatric Technicians, unlicensed assistive personnel, and Registry Staff. This position competently assumes charge in the absence of a Clinical Nurse III.

The Nurse works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team including staff MDs, Resident Doctors, Social Worker, unit Rehab Therapists, the unit Clerk, Hospital Assistants, and the Registration Coordinator. Nursing care is provided primarily on the Inpatient Unit, but the Nurse interacts with other Intensive Service programs at LPPH&C such as Partial Hospitalization Program, Intake, Utilization Management, Consult Liaison Service, and UCSF Medical Center personnel for patient referrals, patient care, admissions, etc.  

The position requires the ability to function competently and professionally while under pressure. The Nurse must be skilled in crisis management and de-escalation.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

UCSF Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital and Clinics (LPPHC) consists of an adult inpatient unit, an adult partial hospitalization program, an adult intensive outpatient program, and adult/child outpatient services accounting for nearly 48,000 visits per year.


Required Qualifications

  • Active Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training within 6 months of hire
  • Minimum 1 year of recent inpatient psychiatric nursing experience required.
  • Lifting more than 50lbs, bending, twisting.  (Not a sedentary position.)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability.
  • A preliminary job offer, and assignment may be extended pending successful background clearance.
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance in the duties assigned to the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Crisis Prevention Institute(CPI) training
  • Experience with electronic health record in healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of California Mental Health Holds (LPS).
  • BSN

License/Certification

  • Active licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR certification
  • Active Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training within 6 months of hire
