Job Summary | The Utah Lions Eye Bank—an extension of the John A. Moran Eye Center—is a nonprofit organization and has facilitated the gift of sight worldwide through transplantation and research since 1972. By restoring vision, cornea donation changes not only the lives of recipients, but also the lives of everyone around them. Located in Murray, Utah, we are a full service eye bank operating 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The Eye Bank Lab Technician is responsible for the core responsibilities of the Utah Lions Eye Bank including tissue distribution, evaluation, and assisting in processing. The Eye Bank Technician takes the lead in the distribution of tissue for transplant and research and plays a direct role in coordinating sight restoration and ocular research. |
Responsibilities | The Eye Bank Lab Technician will be responsible for the following: • Assist in specialized tissue processing for transplant preparation corneal grafts • Performing slit lamp biomicroscopy and specular microscope evaluation on tissue. • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of laboratory • Review all tissue requests submitted into the ULEB database for accuracy and completeness; process daily by assessing appropriateness of match between donor and recipient. • Evaluate, assess, and prioritize all tissue requests with available tissue and allocate appropriate tissue with request. • Coordinate and communicate all distribution and allocation requests with the lab team to ensure on time delivery and appropriate placements. • Prepare tissue information packet for surgeons and assure that packet accompanies all tissue distributed by the ULEB. Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required: Nearly Continuously: Office environment. Often: Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals). Seldom: Exposure to animals. Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking. Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting. Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead. |
Minimum Qualifications | Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments. Preferences | Certification as an Eye Bank Technician, Ophthalmic Technician or Tissue Bank Specialist is preferred. Background in optometry, ophthalmology, or surgery recommended. |
