The ENMED program, founded in 2019, is a collaboration between Texas A&M’s School of Engineering Medicine and the state’s top-ranked Houston Methodist Hospital established to transform health care through the development and training of physicianeers, the development of medical technologies, and translational research. The ENMED physicianeer is a new kind of problem-solving doctor uniquely qualified to address some of health care’s greatest challenges. These graduates receive a medical doctorate and Master of Engineering degree focused on the design and implementation of medical technologies in the same four years through a revolutionary integrated curriculum.

What we want

The Prototyping Lab Manager coordinates the purchase, receipt, distribution, oversight, and maintenance of supplies and equipment in the EnMed Innovation Center (EIC). They coordinate the creation and distribution of training materials and manage access to the restricted spaces of the EIC. They oversee laboratory set-ups, and ensure efficient operations supporting coursework, student projects, and external users. They maintain quality documentation and ensure procedures are followed documenting deviations as necessary. They ensure cleanliness, organization, and overall function of the laboratory.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Five years of related experience in laboratory management.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with lab operations, preferably in a common lab/educational setting.

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

  • Knowledge of scientific equipment associated with genetics, microbiology, chemistry, and life sciences.

  • Knowledge of proper preparation, handling, and disposal of biologicals, chemicals, and glassware.

  • Knowledge of standard laboratory safety procedures.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding.

  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • Manage Laboratory Operations - Manages the coordination of laboratory equipment and instruments in proper operating conditions and assists with special projects.  Facilitates student instruction on the use of instrumentation, supplies and chemicals.  Attends and engages participants in meetings pertaining to laboratory matters.  Approves purchases and maintains compliant purchasing documentation as necessary.  Adheres to Federal, State, and Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) procedures, policies, and safety regulations.

  • Manage Equipment Supplies and Laboratory - Ensures supplies are re-stocked, places and receives orders, and files documentation of received supplies.  Organizes supplies in labs and stockrooms.  Oversees the disposal of laboratory waste according to safety regulations.  Maintains cleanliness and organization of the lab space.  Ensures that procedures are carried out appropriately and issues are addressed.

  • Reporting - Maintains files with inventory of equipment, instruments, and chemicals.  Maintains quality assurance manuals, Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs), validation of laboratory procedures, check sample program, and record control.  Maintains records of laboratory and equipment usage, reports that info to the lab PI and administrative management and uses it to draft and send bills for payment as needed.  Ensures documentation of training and maintains updated training documentation and certifications in laboratory safety procedures and ensures the teaching and creation of laboratory manuals.

  • Supervision of Staff - Leads staff, graduate assistants, and student workers in the laboratory as they manage their schedules, duties, and tasks.  Provides ongoing feedback and communication.
