Campus/College Information:
The University System of Maryland Office (USMO), led by Chancellor Jay A. Perman, is the staff to the Board of Regents. Staff members advocate on behalf of the 12 USM institutions, facilitate collaboration and efficiencies among the institutions, and provide information about the system to the public. With leadership from the USM Board of Regents and Chancellor Perman, the USMO coordinates academic programs, assists with long-range planning and resource management, facilitates private fund raising, and provides financial stewardship.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
This position is located in Adelphi, MD. The Prospect Researcher organizes and oversees the USM’s records relating to current and prospective donors, conducts research to discover prospects for gifts, and documents the association of these prospects.
Responsibilities

  • Researches, analyzes, and prepares individual, corporate, and foundation profiles for current or potential donors for the institutions within the University System of Maryland (USM) and for the USM Office.
  • Collects and analyzes data to prepare written reports on individual, corporation, and foundation donors and potential donors for Development Officers, Chancellor, and Vice Chancellor for Advancement.
  • Proactively identifies prospects for USM institutions. Uses various research resources and publications to scan for information on alumni and prospective donors that can be shared with Development Officers in the USM.
  • Searches, analyzes, and decides which organizations to include in funding searches done for Development Officers in participating schools.
  • Conducts outreach, including off-site visits, to maintain contacts and assess needs of fundraisers within the USM.
  • Maintains computerized lists of prospective members of the organizations in Maryland such as Maryland Chamber of Commerce and the Maryland Business Roundtable for the USM headquarters for accurate mailings and Chancellor’s invitation lists.
  • Maintains and/or creates Ellucian Advance records and updates on prospective and current donors.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:
  • Two years of related work experience in Higher Education or nonprofit industry.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize large amounts of information to useful and accessible information for fundraisers.
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, and time management skills; very high attention to detail.
  • Strong research and analytical skills. Knowledge of Prospect
    Researching tools (including most of the following on-line sources: real estate assessment services, Foundation Directory, Lexis-Nexis, Dun & Bradstreet, Hoovers, etc.).
  • Proficiency at formulating an online search strategy. Proficiency in developing reports that support planning and decision making.
  • Ability to work independently, use initiative and be persistent, as well as work collaboratively, team-oriented approach.
  • Ability to use good judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential information and adhering to professional ethics.
  • Strong communications skills (written and oral).
  • Advanced computer skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs including Word and Excel.

Preferred Education:
  • Master’s degree

Preferred Experience:
  • 2 or more years’ experience in higher education or non-profit advancement research.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current trends with philanthropy and the organization’s industry. Knowledge of different research software and CRMs such as Ellucian Advance.
  • Knowledge of various fundraising programs and giving levels at nonprofits/higher education.
  • Understanding of moves management and major gift fundraising fundamentals.
