The Fayetteville State University Department of Police and Public Safety is responsible for maintaining a safe learning and working environment for our Students, Staff, Faculty, and visitors.

Primary Purpose of Position
The Residence Hall Property Security unit operates within the Fayetteville State University Department of Police and Public Safety. This unit is led by a Police Lieutenant and is responsible for providing security services to the residential facilities on campus. This position will report to a Property Security Sergeant.
This position is primarily night shift; however, it may require some rotating shifts. This position requires weekend, holiday, and/or overtime work. This is an essential / mandatory position that requires the employee to report to work during inclement weather, natural disasters, etc.
This position is being advertised for a limited time and multiple candidates may be hired from the single posting.
Duties and Responsibilities:

75% – Secure, guard, and protect property and grounds. Monitor access to the residence hall by checking ID;s and Hall Entry Cards of each person entering the hall. Verify ID w/hall roster. Document violations. As directed, patrol the interior and exterior of residence hall via foot. Guard property against fire, damage, theft, or other hazards; monitor assigned areas for possible violations of university policies, regulations, and rules of conduct; recognize and report unusual, suspicious, or hazardous situations. The Residence Hall Security Officer should conduct checks of the office, lobby, and surrounding parameters. Residence Hall Security Officers are not allowed to be watching television, using personal electronic devices or patrolling from cars. During residence hall checks, the guards should be mindful of and document all discrepancies such as unlocked suite doors, unusual activities, strangers or non-students, quiet hour violations, emergency conditions, university property damage, visitation violations, disturbances, alcohol violations, drug violations, and/or other violations of university policy/student handbook. The Residence Hall Security Officers are to document and report their findings immediately to the dispatcher by way of radio and assist with responding personnel, as appropriate. Notifies the on call Residence Life Staff of incidents requiring police, fire, or EMS response.
20% – Operate and maintain security enforcement equipment; and maintain related records and security reports. At the beginning of each shift, the Residence Hall Security Officers will briefed and receive training from police personnel and the Security Supervisor. All Residence Hall Security Officers may be required to sign in and out at the Dispatch Office and their designated residence hall(s) or use the normal time tracking procedure established. Attend residence hall staff meetings and participate in designated staff training activities as required by the Office of Residence Life and the Public Safety Department.
5% – Other duties as assigned
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require valid N.C. driver’s license.
Knowledge skills and abilities:
Technical Knowledge:
Understands security enforcement practices. Knowledge and skill in CPR/AED use and basic first aid. Thorough knowledge of the policies, rules, and regulations applicable to the property being guarded, sufficient to explain, apply, and enforce the policies, rules, and regulations. Displays organizational awareness and working knowledge of the infrastructure of the assigned area. Demonstrates proficiency in using a variety of security enforcement equipment, which may include radios, computers, and other electronic devices. Knowledge of the University, department, and
residential policies, rules, and regulations sufficient to interpret those policies, rules, and regulations in unique or unprecedented situations.
Communication Skills:
Ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts.
Communicates information orally or in writing to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the message. Listens and responds appropriately to messages from others. Communicates regarding issues that require some judgment or interpretation. Explains policies, rules, and regulations with tact and courtesy. Completes documentation and reports, as required. Interacts with co-workers, supervisors, emergency response personnel, university officials, and the public to provide assistance and relay information.
Security, Patrol, and Enforcement:
Ability to coordinate security or enforcement for an assigned area or shift.
Patrols, guards, and secures property and grounds. Monitors assigned areas for possible violation of laws and regulations, issuing Campus Appearance Tickets, as required. Assists in emergency response. If required, provides support for special events. Ability to conduct security patrols of both the interior and exterior of residential facilities, to include the ability to climb stairs, walk on uneven surfaces, and the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods. The ability to read and interpret written instructions, policies, procedures, training materials, rosters, and identification documents.
Decision Making:
Ability to independently resolve issues and problems. Identifies problems/concerns and quickly takes appropriate action consistent with available facts, constraints, and anticipated consequences. Analyzes situations, in order to make quick, sound decisions; recognizes critical incidents; initiates action based upon acquired information and knowledge of operating procedures. Ability to understand and follow instructions, directives, policies, and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
At least one year of prior security or security-related experience preferred. Security or security-related experience in a higher education setting preferred.
