T/TAC MISSION STATEMENT
The Training and Technical Assistance Center at William & Mary (T/TAC W&M) is part of a statewide technical assistance system funded by the Virginia Department of Education with flow-through federal monies from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (2004). T/TAC provides assistance to education professionals working with students with disabilities.
The mission of Virginia’s Training and Technical assistance Centers (T/TAC) is to improve educational opportunities and contribute to the success of children and youth with disabilities (birth – 22 years) by enhancing the knowledge, skills, abilities, and performance of all school personnel who work with them. The Centers provide quality training and technical assistance in response to local, regional, and state needs. T/TAC services increase the capacity of school personnel, service providers, and families to meet the needs of children and youth with disabilities.
The T/TAC W&M service region extends from the North Carolina border as far as Southampton County on the south, Stafford and Spotsylvania Counties to the north, and the area between from the coast, including the Eastern Shore, to I-95 on the west.
The T/TACs meet needs by providing and evaluating services such as:
1. consulting with school-based teams
2. providing information services (newsletters, packets, articles, etc.)
3. linking and networking resources together
4. managing a lending library of multi-media resources and technology
5. facilitating long-term technical assistance
6. presenting information about T/TAC services
7. referring to other services
8. developing and conducting workshops
Position Summary
T/TAC W&M specialists are responsible for the design and delivery of professional development experiences (e.g., workshops, onsite team problem solving, written materials, long-term technical assistance) that facilitate school and classroom use of research-based instructional practices in Superintendents’ Regions 2 and 3. T/TAC W&M specialists provide both onsite and offsite training and technical support to school teams that serve students with mild to moderate disabilities. Specialists participate in Virginia Department of Education’s statewide initiatives. This is a full-time position.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must have and maintain a license to teach in the state of Virginia.
  • Travel throughout T/TAC Regions 2 and 3 using their personal vehicles at times; mileage is reimbursed. Overnight travel is required.
  • Incumbents must maintain any existing professional/specialized licensure in special education and/or related field received prior to or during the time of employment.
  • Completes certification requirements for specific State-directed projects as directed by and funded through the VDOE and T/TAC W&M once employed by T/TAC W&M.
  • Restricted position – position subject to funding availability.

Required Qualifications
Education and Training:
Specialists must hold at least a Master’s Degree in Special Education, General Education, or a related educational field with significant educational experience, and demonstrate knowledge, skills, and experience in the following areas:
  • Collaborating effectively with colleagues, families, administrators, and community members
  • Facilitating appropriate general curriculum access for students at elementary, middle, and/or high school levels (i.e., participation of students with disabilities in the Standards of Learning curriculum and the Virginia assessment program)
  • Communicating effectively in both written and oral formats
  • Presenting effective professional development to small and large audiences
  • Implementing research-based instructional/behavioral practices effectively
  • Demonstrating leadership in school settings
  • Working independently and managing professional time effectively
  • Demonstrating knowledge of or experience with the change process

Technical Requirements:
Proficiency in use of hardware/software for either Windows platform or Apple platform required. Specialists must have a thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
Project Specialists must possess effective leadership skills that have been demonstrated in either general and/or special education positions (e.g., lead teacher, chair or member of key committees, program coordinator, supervisor, building administrator).
Project Specialists must have experience working with school teams in the development and delivery of appropriate services to support general curriculum access for students with disabilities and/or other students at risk
  • Must have and maintain a license to teach in the state of Virginia.
  • Incumbents must maintain any existing specialized licensure in special education and/or related field received prior to or during the time of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Co-teaching in inclusive school communities
  • Experience applying research-based practices in the classroom setting.
  • Experience employing technology to enhance instruction
  • Experience with VDOE’s statewide projects and initiatives.
  • Experience teaching core content (English, math, science, or social studies)
