Job Summary

UCSF’s Clinical Pharmacy is seeking a Project Manager. The ideal candidate will have the following duties:
(1) project management and analysis.
(2) research support. Research projects focus on clinical pharmacy and related medical sciences. Methodological areas include clinical research and trials, primary and secondary data analysis, health equity, access to pharmacological services, cost-effectiveness analysis, insurance coverage, and evidence synthesis.

The successful candidate will work on high impact research projects with a worldwide, highly regarded team of researchers. The successful candidate will be expected to perform a range of tasks ranging from more routine administrative and research support to more high-level tasks such as participating in study analyses. The candidate will have opportunities to interface not only with academic researchers but also with the healthcare industry and government. 

The candidate will become part of a centralized research support team who will work on various funded projects. This position offers the right candidate an opportunity to gain knowledge about the pharmaceutical healthcare field, to work with a wide array of project investigators and University staff, and to develop leadership abilities in project management. This is a great opportunity for someone who is a quick learner, can understand the big picture, and can be equally comfortable doing computer work or people-oriented work. It is grant-supported and thus the incumbent must enjoy fast-paced and entrepreneurial environments.

Activities of this position include:

  • Project management, e.g., manage project deadlines and budgets, participate in grant submissions including budget and proposal preparation.
  • Project analyses and research support, e.g., participate in research activities by working directly with one or more principal investigators (PIs) and other collaborators to analyze topics, organize meetings, develop research studies, assist PIs and collaborators as requested.
  • ***NOTE: This is a one year contract role.

    Department Description

    The Department of Clinical Pharmacy is a multi-faceted department with centers, laboratories, and educational programs with many locations at UCSF (Parnassus, Mission Bay and ZSFG) and throughout the state. It is home to a number of functional units, including the Center for Translational and Policy Research on Personalized Medicine (TRANSPERS), Drug Research Unit (DRU), Medication Outcomes Center (MOC), the California Poison Control System (CPCS), The department also delivers a substantial portion of the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum at UCSF.


    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
    • Minimum 3 years of related experience.
    • 1-3 years' experience in research administration in a research-intensive environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    Project Management
    • Proven team and project management skills: organizational, communication and interpersonal skills; clear, concise and courteous verbal and written communications; demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple work assignments and meet strict deadlines; attention to detail.
    • Experience planning and implementing meetings (phone, web, and in-person) including scheduling and agenda setting.
    • Demonstrated experience drafting presentation materials including power point presentations, posters, and abstracts.
    • Experience developing policy documents.
    Research Project Administration
    • Experience developing project timelines and task management.
    • Experience managing research project deliverables.
    • Experience coordinating team member activities.
    • Knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
    • Analytical / problem-solving skills.
    • Strong skills in analyzing, researching, and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals / analyses.
    • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
    • Strong policy analysis techniques.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in a related subject area e.g. MPH.
    • Expertise or knowledge of clinical pharmacy and research areas.
    • Experience composing and editing technical materials for general audiences.
    • Knowledge of research grants and research management.
    • Experience working in an academic or research environment.
    • Basic knowledge of research processes and methods.
    • Experience conducting literature searches and systematically summarizing results.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Expertise in using MS Excel for preparing budgets and programming scenarios (e.g. experience with formulas, linking multiple sheets for data inputs).
    • Excellent computer skills; demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe and EndNote.
    • Ability to handle work requests from several people and work independently as well as part of a team.
