JOB SUMMARY


The University of Connecticut Technical Assistance for Brownfields Program (UConn TAB) is competitively recruiting a talented land use planner or site design professional to join our team.  UConn TAB operates throughout New England as part of a nationwide USEPA program that helps communities, states, tribes, and others learn how to assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields – properties where expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. 


UConn TAB provides free-of-charge assistance to help address brownfield challenges, including grant writing support, brownfield inventories, data collection, document reviews, evaluation of brownfield redevelopment options, and other targeted assistance. 


We invite applications for the open position of Project Manager (Research Assistant 3). Under the direction of the UConn TAB Program Administrator and Program Manager, the individual selected for this position will work with other UConn TAB staff and student interns to help accomplish the mission of the UConn TAB program. 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


As part of the UConn TAB team, the selected Project Manager will work as part of the UConn TAB team to: 


  • Help communities evaluate site reuse and redevelopment options for brownfield sites and areas impacted by multiple brownfield sites. 
  • Identify technical and regulatory challenges to site redevelopment and propose solutions to these challenges.  
  • Develop conceptual redevelopment plans and renderings; interact with community stakeholders.  
  • Assess the needs of the UConn TAB program and collaborate on identifying, developing, and implementing improvements to the program. 
  • Assist with organizational, programmatic, planning, and other tasks and activities of the UConn TAB Program. 
  • Oversee the work of students and assigned personnel, including assigning and reviewing work, providing mentorship, professional development, and training. 
  • Participate in project meetings and contribute to technical reporting. 
  • Assist with program outreach. 
  • Perform related work as required. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, land use planning, or a related field. 
  • Ten years of related experience in professional site design and land use permitting. 
  • Experience working on the planning, design, and/or permitting the redevelopment of urban, industrial, and/or commercial properties. 
  • Excellent writing skills. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers, planners, and environmental professionals on the redevelopment of brownfield sites or other derelict or contaminated sites. Ability to collaborate with constituents at other higher educational workplaces to ensure best practices are established. 
  • Familiarity with land development regulations in multiple New England states. 
  • Proficiency with SketchUp 3-D Design Software or similar. 
  • Experience with community engagement and collaboration. 
  • Experience in the solicitation and procurement of professional engineering, environmental services, and construction contracting. 
  • Experience securing and/or administering EPA brownfield grants or other state and federal grants.  

APPOINTMENT TERMS


This is a full-time, grant-funded position at the University of Connecticut with a term of one year, subject to renewal. The primary work location will be the UConn campus in Storrs, Connecticut; remote work may be considered in accordance with the University's Alternate Work Arrangements policy and authorization. Occasional day and overnight travel to locations around New England will be required. Attendance at multi-day training and professional conferences within New England or elsewhere in the U.S. will be optional.
