Job Description

The Texas A&M Forest Service is seeking an individual to help deliver its day-to-day and seasonal activities in its urban tree improvement program.


Responsibilities:

The Program Specialist will work under the supervision of the Tree Improvement Coordinator to:
-Administer seed orchard activities to include establishment, managment and seed collection.

-Work with TAMFS Urban and Community (UCF) foresters to coordinate the collection of seed from non-orchard sites and establish research trials of new species to be evaluated for the program.

-Technical support assistance with local UCF public requests will be required on an as-needed basis.

-Responsible for all growing activities conducted at the Forest Science Laboratory, including the production, care and management of hardwood seedlings for distribution to TAMFS foresters for Arbor Day and other activities.

-Knowledge of seedling diseases and pests is desirable.

-Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions: May require exposure to weather. Must be willing to operate lift equipment during seasonal periods such as breeding season. May require walking, standing, twisting and bending for extended periods of time. May require lifting heavy objects. Hours of work are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday. Overnight travel for periods up to one work week are required.

Education and Experience:
Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Natural Resources or related field of study.

Preferred Education: Master's degree in Forestry, Natural Resources or related field of study.

Required Experience: 0-2 years of experience in natural resource conservation, arboriculture or urban forestry.

Preferred Experience: Two (2) or more years experience in land management, natural resources, conservation, urban forestry, horticulture or arboriculture.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Required Knowledge: SAS, Microsoft Access, Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Preferred Knowledge: Greenhouse growing operations.

Required Skills: Attention to detail. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong management skills and discipline.
Required Abilities: Work independently. Willingness to take on new challenges, such as managing large datasets and field trials, will be essential. Multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Registrations, Certifications and Licenses:

Required: Within first year of employment - Valid Texas Drivers license, Noncommercial Political Pesticide Applicator license, ISA Certified Arborist certificate.

Preferred: Membership in ISA Municipal Specialist, SAF Certified Forester and TFA
